I always go to a market if I can and this one is full of good things. The fish was excellent and very varied. If only I could visit a place like this close to my home - a dream I'm afraid. The veg too had lots of local stuff, wild spring hops Brucandoli, and baby artichokes, sun dried tomatoes... More

Lovely market with fresh produce its good to see at different seasons to see the great variety available here . Obviously it's touristy but it's been here for years and locals use it as it delivers good food .

We wandered through the market and bought some fruit before heading off for a coffee and pastries in the neighbouring streets. We're not that keen on eating fish, but our children were fascinated to see the live crabs and huge fish for sale. It was really quiet when we visited at about 8.00am (April). The Rialto bridge was even quiet... More

If you visit Venice you must come here. Some of the fish and seafood here are unique to this area in the world and it's a sight to behold!

Love the Mercatto - so much going on everywhere- it is fascinating how everything comes and goes in and out of the islands on the little boats

If only the markets at home were daily and this good. Freshest seafood (some of which i had never seen before), ripe fruits and just picked vegetables. The sight of all this quality produce was a joy. Available to buy or observe, get here early to view the best. Some lovely little cafes/bars close by too

We went here speaking good food and found some stalls selling produce but not too many food stalls. There were a bunch of vendors outside the market selling tourist items. It's worth a visit but keep expectations in check.

I was so lucky that when I rented an apartment in Venice this market was steps from my doorway. My mother and I went down each morning and were able to pour over the mass selection of amazing fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables and fish. We ended up seeing the same friendly face that operated the market and always... More

If you get there late in the morning you Will miss the action. Only vendors sifting through leftovers, closely watched by hungry seagulls.be there earlier and you will see serious chefs ready to spot what's best for their daily menus.and some of it may be part of your gourmet dinner.

Staying in San Polo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
