Neighbourhood: Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

As the whole area of Venice is full of architecture especially seen in buildings, it's not big surprise that there is less monuments of historical people. But many of them also can be found, also inside. Vittorio Emmanuel II's monument is easy to find when walking around San Marco, and if you happen to arrive via vaporetto's. Many details can be realize how (slowly) this kind of sculptures have been during when they were made and stood.

The monument is dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, who is the first king of unified Italy (in 1861). Nothing spectacular about it.

Vittorio on a stallion with lions at its feet looks impressive, but reading the history he really wasn't. After a visit in 1867 a foreign diplomat reported after talking to local politicians: "There is universal agreement that Victor Emmanuel is an imbecile; he is a dishonest man who tells lies to everyone."
Some Venetians suggested the statue should be replaced by one of Garibaldi who played a much more significant role in the unification of Italy than Vittorio Emanuele II. Note that the man refused to be renamed Vittorio Emanuele I, after he became the first king of Italy. He preferred to be called the second king of Sardinia underlining the supremacy of Sardinia. Poor example for a unified Italy.

This statue was put up to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the death of Vittorio Emanuele II who was the first king of the kingdom of Italy. This is located on the boardwalk to the east of St. Mark's Square and is worth a quick stop while walking around Venice

This is an imposing monument of Vittorio Emanuele II, located on Riva Degli Schiavoni, just next to the water.

...like all of the other things in Venice, it is a spot worth paying attention. It's a busy spot, but crowds do not make it less special. A spot where we've begun and ended our Venice tour, a spot for uniting, as the monument's first purpose was.

You will see this ignored statue as you walk by to board the ferry to Murano. Thousands pass by it and even I didn't notice it till we were returning on the Vaporetto back from Murano.
