Top ways to experience Ca' Macana Atelier and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

Very nice welcome from a young woman who spoke French very well and made us completely relaxed to watch and take photos.
Does not encourage consumption and all prices are displayed, which is not always the case in Venice stores. Sumptuous masks Thank you and stay professional like that

Very nice to paint on a mask, this is done in three steps:
- paint the mask
- detail of a mask
-varnish
An experience not to be missed when you are in Venice.
Great value for Award.
You can have explanations in French and other languages.
The girl is very nice, she teaches us techniques easily.

We enjoined our Venetian mask making. And it is the best souvenir, a self made mask. We loved it and our kids even more.

Venetian masks are something we all need to have at least one of. And what better place to get it other than Ca' Macana Atelier. the artist making the masks here is genuinely nice and you can see him at work.

The prices are reasonable, in fact the best prices we found while in Venice. they have a lot of variety so what ever your budget is, they'll have a piece for you.

I cant recommend this place enough for anyone looking to purchase an authentic Venetian mask while also getting to see one in the making.

I've been to Ca' Macana Atelier every time I have gone to Venice and purchased one to two masks from the owner and creator each time-stunning originality and if you are a mask collector or simply an aficianado, you can't resist these masks. He is a real artist, his prices are terrific, and he wraps the masks so that you can carry home with you and not worry about dings or destruction on the plane ride. His steampunk masks are intricately decorated and weighty-this time, I got an angry Alice in Wonderland steampunk rabbit with clocks and gears all over its head. Do not miss stopping by for a look (and a mask!)

My family & have been city travelling during Easter Break (2017). But because our kids were getting bored, my husband & I had to find something else for them to do, otherwise they were not having anymore walking around Venice....despite all the gelato bribe we've been offering them. My husband found this amazing shop.
You get to chose 1 from the many selection of masks they had. Choose the type of color palate you want...then 1 of the artists will come & guide you how to start & finish. My girls had a ton of fun. I loved seeing them explore their artistic side. Worth every penny.

Use google maps to get here...not very easy to find.

The one souvenir
we cared to get from Venice was a carnival mask. We wanted one made by an artist from Venice. Walking around we did not see any, but on our way to the cruise terminal, we found Ca' Macana Atelier. This shop is located in Cannaregio 1374/75 (Venice tel #: 041 718655).

We were greeted as soon as we walked in. Not being extremely observant, I asked if the masks were made by local artisans. The gentleman quickly pointed out the apron he was wearing, covered in dust from the papier mache and dust and paint on his hands.

So many masks to choose from...so many price variations. We were not looking to spend more than 35-40 euros. Mr. Brassesco quickly took us thru the shop and explains the differences in the masks and their prices. We settled on a mask for 30 euros, he informed us he would reduce the price further if we paid cash; can't beat that. If we had not been in a hurry to embark on our cruise, I probably would have bought another. Mr. Brassesco told us not to worry about damaging the mask during the remaining 14 days of our trip. He wrapped it up carefully to ensure we did not damage it. When we caught our flight home, it was in our carry-on luggage and made it home fine. Our young grandchildren are fascinated by it.

First of all this is not the same mask store as Ca' Macana in the Dorsoduro neighborhood. Ca' Macana Atelier is located along the less touristy Cannaregio street. Carlos, the owner is a very soft spoken, patient person. It was almost closing time when we found and decided to enter the store. Carlos show and explained to us a few of his collections of mask individually hand made by his artist right on the shop. As any other Venetian mask shop, there are tons of masks hanging from every inch of the shop. Price ranging from 16 Euros for the simple mask to over 250 Euros for the fancy carnival or theatre mask. During the day, visitors probably can see the artist at work as their workshop is part of the mask shop.

We have been shopping for mask around Venice. Although similar in price and quality, the owner of this shop makes all the difference. He answered all of our questions. After the purchase, he wrapped our masks neatly with layered of paper and bubble wrap for the long journey. Maybe because it was late in the evening when Venice calms down, but we had a great experience shopping for our masks at Ca’ Macana Atelier in the Cannaregio neighborhood.

We have been here during Carnival this year. We discover that they offer the possibility to paint our mask. Me and my daughter spent 1,5 of real pleasure to decorate the mask according our imagination. The owner and the staff are very kind. To repeat.

We walked in and there was a man sitting in a little workshop area carefully moulding an elephant head - amazing.
His selection of masks were second to none. The best, and most unique, where his bionic masks that has a vibe of steampunk/Terminator.
It's not the largest shop, although pretty big for Venice, but it is packed full of masks of every colour, size and price range.
Well worth a visit, even if you're not intending to buy.
The shop owner completely ignores you, which is a delight in Venice as everyone else seems desperate to sell something.
