The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

If you want a real artisan experience in Venice, this is the one. Well off the main ways of Venice, we found ourselves in a local community with a humble shop front The interior is small and reeks authenticity. Our artisan is a strongly built man and it seems as odds with the delicate work he produces. He put some chill R&B on, then for the next hour or so explained the historical significance of Murano (his heritage). He is engaging, funny and interested in the people with him on this journey. Genuinely lovely bloke! He sculpted a piece to show technique then guided us to make our own pieces, with the techniques he showed us. Show...guide...support. First class teaching. We have tremendous memories of this experience (and moments as you get to keep what you make). This is not a manufactured "sit and watch" exhibition/ it was a genuine hands on learning experience. One of my best experiences travelling over the years. Do it!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 November 2023

He’s talented and his expertise and passion for glass is obvious. We enjoyed every minute of the class. Every time I look at the pendant I made it makes me smile, and it brings back great memories of the class and Venice. I would definitely recommend taking this class.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 November 2023

The works of art that line the walls are intricate and show care for the details. Be prepared to learn about the long standing history of Murano Glass and why its role is still important in creating glass works of art today. The shop also offered funky tunes to get the creative juices flowing. With the level of direction we received and under careful watch, we felt safe, comfortable and had a lot of fun making our own pendants.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024

My fiancé and I took a glassmaking workshop at Massimiliano’s studio as part of my 37th birthday. It was a great experience—I’d seen glassblowing on a large scale (with the huge ovens) a few times, but the process used for the miniatures you see all over Venice is completely different.
We each left with a pendant we had made ourselves, and all throughout the day, I caught myself clutching it or gazing at my fiance’s—it was a very special experience and left us with a very special souvenir from our trip!
His studio also has several pieces he’s made himself which are beautiful and fantasy-like—very different from the stuff you see in the stores around Venice, and you know it’s authentic because you can see the torch and work area right there in the studio.
I highly recommend this! It was one of the highlights of our trip.

This experience was a highlight of our time in Venice! Massimiliano was extremely accommodating. It was an incredible way to learn about glass and create something really unique to bring home. Massimilano was a great conversationalist and teacher. Would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Venice :)

Reading some reviews, booking this experience through third parties with poor communication could lead to Massimiliano Caldarone not being notified that someone is scheduled with him. We booked through the website Venice Tours SRL, which seemed to be the most direct way to reach him, and it worked out perfectly. The experience itself is only for two people, but he invited the third person in our group stay and watch, and made sure there were chilled water bottles on hand, which was very thoughtful. If you want to get hands-on, and don't want the fuss of joining the crowds in Murano, this is an ideal alternative.
He has a small workshop, and grooves to his music while creating pieces. It seems to help him keep the glass turning smoothly, but if you have a noise sensitivity the bass may bother you a bit. Massimiliano is very nice, instructed us in English, and even gave us cords so we could wear the pendants we had created out of his shop, feeling very impressed with our new glass fusing skills.

There is Murano glass in many of the shops in Venice but the Murano glass take a magnificent turn. This artist is very knowledgeable regarding the history of Murano glass and his presentation on how to shape this glass into extraordinary pieces of art is phenomenal. The fact that he allow you to experience first hand the process of shaping glass. Great shop, great glass art and a great Artist.

I found his shop accidently yesterday evening, and I went in after I saw all the amazing glass products in the window. He was making a beautiful huge glass statue for the carnevale. All his product is beautiful, statues, jewellery, lots of other stuff. He's very friendly and funny, helped me to choose something nice. I was looking for something nice for myself all day but nothing looked good enough, all touristy cheep products, until I found his shop. I happily paid the little extra to have something hand made and beautiful. I'm very happy with the purchase. Thank you very much!!

Unforgettable experience. Massimiliano is fun, relaxed, and a great teacher. His passion for glassmaking is contagious. My son and I had a great time watching him work, and learning to make a pendant that we could bring home with us.

Massimiliano Caldarone is a talented glass artisan, a patient teacher and a wealth of knowledge about the history of Murano glass! Booked a private lesson for my wife and I, and we both had a great time learning about the art of glass flamework and trying our hands at making our own beautiful Murano glass pendants that we kept as colorful memories of a unique vacation experience. The throbbing Electronic Dance Music that Massimiliano listens to as he stretches and bends molten glass rods into elegant and intricate shapes gives a foreshadowing of the playful and sexy pieces of art on display and for sale in his workshop.
