Nice statue well situated in a quiet and attractive piazza. Well worth a visit. Go the extra 50m out the Eastern side of the Piazza to the impressive Scaligeri tombs, its amazing how few do so.

In the center of Piazza dei Signori is located the monument to Dante Alighieri Italian poet. Surrounded by beautiful medieval palaces, the statue shows all its beauty and splendor. The statue was made by Ugo Zannoni in marble of Carrara. It was set up in 1875 because the city decided to build a monument devoted to the most important Italian poet. Because Dante was a guest Scaligeri in Verona during his exile from Florence. Here we have an interesting historical detail.
The construction of the statue had a political background because the statue was an opportunity for search of Italian origin Verona from Austria.

Just a statue but in one of the most important squares of the city. Just in the heart of Verona you will find it.

It's a nice statue, in the middle of a busting piazza. Why not go see it? It's not a reason to come to Verona, but it's cool to see while you are there.

This ponderful statue of Dante presides over the quiet beauty of Piazza dei Signori. It’s rather beautiful.

This monument was erected in 1865, the 600th anniversary of his birth, to honour one of Italy's most famous poets who resided in Verona between 1312/18. Verona was under the control of Austria at the and the monument was erected at night so that no Austrian Representative would participate in the inauguration ceremony. Impressive.

I’m a little disappointed in myself. Being a math and science person, I’m only now understanding the importance of Dante and his enormous contributions. He lived before the invention of the printing press. And, I think writing, the copying of manuscripts, and the delivery of writings proved to be an arduous task. My understanding is that Dante was the first person to write something, not in a Latin form, only for the elite, but in the Italian language, for even the everyday people. Dante invented the Italian language so everyone could equally understand all written material. Dante probably didn’t know, that just 100 years later, the printing press would be invented, and books would be mass produced, with the creation of enormous libraries.

Several interesting buildings on this piazza. Of course, there is much more to see in Verona. I would suggest visiting the Roman amphitheater.

Dante is a name we all know, but for most of us it's hard to get our head around his key influence in western literature, including his enormous influence on a number of key English literati. Besides the technical and literary quality of his work the simple fact that he wrote mostly in venacular Italian and not Latin was a key departure for western literature, and one not much loved by the Church of the day. And that of course is why his statue is here - wandering in exile he spent some years in Verona, and so it's only fair that Verona claims a strong connection. A fine sculpture in a superb Piazza.

On the Piazza dei Signori stands this nice statue. After the statue the locals calls the square Dante square. It fits into the surrounding buildings.
