Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

...it is located in Bari Vecchia!!...and precisely in Piazza Mercantile!!...it is the "infamous column"!!...or Column of Justice!!...today on the steps you can see people sitting calmly!!...but Once upon a time people wanted to stay far away from here!!…because this was the place where insolvent debtors!!…were put in the public pillory!!…the Monument has four steps…with a marble pillar and a small sphere on top ...and a lion crouching at the base with the Latin writing...which means "guardian of justice"!!...it is said that here insolvent debtors...bankrupts and bankrupts were stripped naked underneath and made to sit astride the lion with his hands tied to the column and his backside facing the public!!…this is what they say about this Column of Justice!!…even though I later read that there are many other theories from other scholars about this Monument in Bari Vecchia !!…

Ancient column with lion, is dated back in the 16th century when the Vicerè of Neaples, Pietro di Toledo, positioned it in this square to tie thieves and defrauders

This is a 'hidden element' on the Piazza Mercantile, but you should not miss it. It is an historic landmark, where bad debtors used to be humiliated in public.

This pillar was erected in Bari by the Spanish Viceroy Pedro de Toledo in the middle of the XVI century. To take and not to give was a good tradition in Puglia. Debtors to banks or individuals were chained to a shameful column. Lion is located here according to the legend from the XII century and had the function of a talisman for the city, to protect it from misfortunes.

Read now on TripAdvisor what the column is about. Almost did not notice it, and it's actually a pretty cool thing. Could use an information plaque.

Found in one corner at the far end of Piazza Mercantile. The age of the column and lion are evident from the worn surfaces. People seem to climb on the lion's back to take selfies and generally fool around. Had to wait for a while to get a photo of the debtor's column which is up a couple of steps.

Dating back to 16th century, this column - accompanied by a figure of a lion - was a place where insolvent debtors used to be exposed for punishment by public humiliation.
