- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia19,509 contributionsPicturesque bigger old townWe left Bari to be the last place on our week long Puglia tour. It is the biggest city on the entire Italian heel and a busy port. Although we visited several charming small towns and villages, Bari despite its size left a very good impression. The old town is set within the city fortified walls with two outstanding Churches - St. Nicholas Basilica and Bari Cathedral. Tiny streets between them are full of life and very pleasant to walk - the oriechette pasta ladies, several authentic street food shops with big lines, hundreds of bars and restaurants,... Have at least 3 hours to explore it.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 October 2023
- OZS_ATWBudapest, Hungary4,012 contributionsLovelyI have to agree with fellow travelers that Bari is such an underrated town without the sign of over tourism like in Venice for example. It is a must to visit! We sped some time wandering around the Old Town, checking out small squares, buildings and local shops. We enjoyed very much our time in the old town.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 December 2023

- alillaboBudapest, Hungary55 contributionsCharming narrow streetsExploring the Città Vecchia (Old Town) in Bari is an enchanting experience. The narrow, winding streets provide ample shade, making it a pleasant escape from the hot sun while adding to the charm of the area. Each turn and alleyway feels like stepping back in time. One of the most striking aspects of the Old Town is the abundance of churches. It seems like there is a beautiful, historic church around every corner, each with its own unique story and architecture. These sacred spaces add a sense of serenity and history to your stroll. However, one thing to note is that there are no trees or plants in the Città Vecchia. The area is characterized by its stone buildings and cobblestone streets, which, while adding to the historic ambiance, means you won't find much greenery. Despite this, getting lost in the charming streets of the Città Vecchia is a delightful way to spend an afternoon. The historical richness and architectural beauty make it a must-visit when in Bari. **Pro Tips:** - Wear comfortable shoes for walking on the cobblestone streets. - Take your time to explore the many churches and soak in the history. - Enjoy the natural shade provided by the narrow streets, especially on hot days.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2024

With a gorgeous old town, bustling traditional harbour and Italy’s best beaches nearby, the Italian port city of Bari is well worth a visit. Add a thriving local food scene and you may never leave...and of course here's one of the best Duomo, the Orthodox-Catholic st. Nicholas church.

Bari has a breathtaking seafront, it is an old city nothing short of suggestive. Cradle of art and history it is really impossible not to love it from the first meeting, we left with a long walk on the seafront, being a very moon walk we know stopped at the beach Bread and Tomato, another feature the presence near the beach of gymnastic equipment for any sportsmen of the case. Going back we visited the Basilica of San Nicola, very beautiful and crowded, the Cathedral of San Sabino simpler both in terms of architecture and interior design. Pleasant surprise the imposing Swabian Norman Castle, but inside with animated 3D representation, which represented Bari in ancient times, really very beautiful. We continued in via delle Orecchiette, what can I say, unique in its kind, crowded with tourists especially foreigners, who admired these ladies in the work of creating this pasta known throughout the world. the next day was totally dedicated to the old city, very particular characteristic with the houses that become street food for who wants to taste the typical dishes of the area. Absolutely Recommendation to visit it

We stayed here on 16-08-24 and during the walk in the alleys of the old town, where the houses are leaning against each other and on every corner there are churches, monuments and views of the sea, we could visit the Cathedral Basilica of San Sabino, its Crypt with the Archaeological Area, the Exultet Museum next to it, Via Arco Basso which is the street of orecchiette, commonly called here “the Strascinate”, where women anchor work by hand, with water, semolina and knives, outside at their exits and resting on esplanades. We also visited the two theaters, Margherita and Petruzzelli, which do their part to make this place important and finally the Walls and the well-known Cathedral of San Nicola that excel in importance and overlook the beautiful promenade first in Europe in length. Cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, various commercial activities, pizzerias and especially pubs fill the center with a special nightlife at all hours. We advise you to dedicate to this historic center the necessary hours to avoid missing something interesting. Highly recommended.

The area of the complex of old and beautiful buildings, surprising! The ideal is to walk around and get lost in the narrow alleys of the place. We observed many wooden doors, all different from each other and very beautiful (some very low). The place serves as a residence for many older people, who seem to live joyfully in that place. The women walk to Shopping and meet with other women along the narrow alleys. The men gather to drink, smoke, talk and play cards. At night, the place is very busy and draws attention to the number of young people (some very young) who pass through the gangs. Restaurants and bars are full of tourists and many native people. Some even have huge queues to wait for a table.

Anticipation filled me as I looked forward to my visit to Bari's Old Town, where I could witness the skilled grandmothers crafting their incredible orecchiette pasta. Citta Vecchia proved to be exactly as I had imagined—a charming village reminiscent of a quintessential Italian village. After a thorough search along the quaint streets, I was delighted to discover the grandmas engaged in their craft. Their expertise lived up to the hype, leaving me no choice but to purchase a bag of their handmade pasta. Excitement brimming, I planned to prepare it that evening at my vacation rental alongside fresh vegetables sourced from a nearby stand in Old Town. Truly a delightful experience!

Bari is one of the urban centers of Apulia and a good location to explore the Murgia and the coasts. The old town streets, the many small and large cultural assets and the Apulian cuisine are exceptional. Parking is difficult, as everywhere in the old towns, but it is OK at the harbor or towards the train station. We stayed outside the center for a few days (in the orto botanico) and then always drove into the city. Very good infrastructure and transport connections. We used the efficient airport 5 years ago.

It's wonderful to get lost in the alleys of the old city following the flow of people. A different charm during the day and at night. The experience of walking on a Sunday evening in which the empty city with closed restaurants seems unrecognizable is very particular

I think that if you want to breathe the air of authentic Bari you can't do without a visit to the old city, known everywhere as Bari Vecchia. It has been the subject of a good redevelopment activity and the results are tangible. The city is clean, quiet and livable. There are clubs and restaurants, the atmosphere is relaxed, there is even a street where they sell handmade orecchiette produced in the street. It's nice to get lost in its alleys, looking for the Basilica, the Castle and, why not, the splendid Barese focaccia

Buongiorno.

Hi! We will be spending only one night in Bari. Arriving around lunch time on a Sunday and leaving on Monday to go to Rome. We will be driving, and staying at the old town. We know we can't park in the old town and were told the street around it is free parking. I see there are some garages in the area, does anyone know if parking is always per hour, or if they have a over night fee? I have been searching and not able to get an answer for that. Appreciate any help. Thanks!

I am driving from foggia and would like to visit the woman making the pasta.
1. Do they make it on Saturday?
2. Is there a place close to park my car and walk over?
Or is it too difficult to get to with a vehicle?
Grazie!

You can leave your car on the lungomare and walk to the bari vecchia. There are few houses with old ladies making pasta but you may need to make couple of circles on these streets to find one of them. They usually do it in the morning about 10-11am on saturdays too.

Where can I get info on the bus lines/routes that connect the train station with the old city? I am trying to find a B&B that is sensibly near a bus stop so I can easily get to/from the station for day trips.
Written 22 March 2015
DAVE here again: It appears that there is a bus #20 that connects the port with the train station. Does it stop elsewhere? Just trying to get a B&B with easy bus access to the station as I plan to be making several day trips with my wife over 5-6 days and she doesn't care for long walks. THANKS
