Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Ponte Girevole is a good starting point for a visit to Taranto, its a swing bridge and opening times are posted nearby but I have not yet been lucky enough to see it open. From here you can easily walk into the new city with its shops and restaurants, don't miss the museum. There is a very pleasant walk along the Promenade with good views of the Aragonese Castle, the walk takes about an hour and there is a good caffe about half way along if you need a break, the Promenade is protected by two rows of trees so is good at any time of year - my favorite is a sunny Sunday morning in Winter or Spring.
Walk in the other direction, past the entrance to the Castle, past the remains of the Doric temple and visit the Cathedral in the oldest part of Taranto. This is also a good place to find excellent seafood restaurants along the waterside.

This bridge was made at the cost of 1 tower of the castle. But it is 1 one a kind in the world. it only takes 3 minutes to open or close.

Taranto has and old historic centre which is linked to the new part of the city by the Ponte Girevole. It swings open to let boats pass through a narrow channel. Views from here at sunset are spectacular.

A steel bridge connecting the centro storico to the new part of town. On the new part of town, you can have an nice long walk along the water, on a path leading towards the bridge. The bridge itself is busy with traffic, coming into town next to the centro storico. The centro storico itself is in an abominable state and I would only recommend it to you to go and visit if you want to see what state the streets and houses are in.

The swing bridge in Taranto was first constructed during the nineteenth century and was initially made of wood. During this period the bridge had turbines that served to ensure the operation of the bridge and its opening. To work the turbines had to be operated by the fall of water inside a cistern that was located in the Aragonese Castle. Around 1956 it was decided to build a bridge made of metal and it was made in a similar way to the wooden one only that the operation was then via an electrical system. The swing bridge today is looking a little worse for wear and could use a bit of tic, however, it can still be opened whenever it is necessary for a ship to pass.

This bridge goes over the channel separating the Old City from the modern part Borgo Nuovo of the Taranto. Two arms of the Bridge Ponte Girevole (Swing Bridge) are rotating for open bridge to permit vessels and ships to transit the channel, which functioned by two hydraulic turbines situated in Castello Aragonese. Bridge was constructed originally in 1887 and dedicated to St Francis of Paola, the patron saint and protector of boatmen, mariners and naval officers. We could not get enough of views of the seafront Corso Due Mari, channel and Aragonese Castle.

Ponte girevole connect old town to modern part of the city. Just nearby castello aragonese but very interesting bridge, because sometimes -whenever needed- it can be opened so big vessels can come in the harbour and go out.

Had the pleasure of visiting my family in Taranto. They took us for a tour of the city . The bridge was beautiful, located right next to the castle of Aragon. Did not see the bridge swing while we were there.

Beautiful bridge with its peculiarity. It moves sometimes from 00.00 a.m. to 04:00 a.m. You must see it moving before leaving Taranto.
