About
The Museum illustrates the entire history of the ancient city and the Olbia area, from prehistory to the 19th century, with particular reference to the Phoenician, Greek, Punic and Roman phases of the urban and port area, the richest in historical and archaeological documentation . Elements of particular interest are the Roman and medieval wrecks found in the excavation of the ancient port, corresponding to the waterfront of the current historic centre. Olbia is the only city in Sardinia to have been inhabited by Greeks between 630 and 520 BC. C., and the name they gave it, Olbía, that is "happy" in relation to the extraordinary opportunities that the site offers to human settlement, was adopted as the name and logo, in capital Greek characters, of the Museum.

The biggest display in the museum are remains of ancient ships excavated in the Port of Olbia. While interesting - the museum was largely empty during our stay in Olbia. It looked like most of the rooms were repurposed from their original intention to hold some temporary exhibits not related to archeology. We were disappointed, luckily the museum is free so I'd say it's still worth to check it out in case it is improved.

Very disappointed by this Museum. The building itself was impressive - a lovely space to display exhibits, however there were hardly any exhibits in it! A lot of it was empty! Never seen anything like it! Had there been a robbery??? All of the written info was in Italian only - I think there was an option to get a headset with audio explanations in English, but this was not offered to us when we went in. It took us less than 15 mins to visit, so we went on the big Ferris wheel nearby to cheer ourselves up.

An amazing experience that gives a well delivered history of the city and the island. One of the few indoor attractions in the area and it delivered. Audio description of all the exhibits in multiple languages (can confirm Italian, English, and German), making all exhibits easy to understand whilst giving an excellent overall story to the island's history. Is very central and is a must visit when in Olbia. Plus it is free. Well worth spending a couple of hours minimum and is very close to some amazing restraunts aswell.

This museum certainly deserves its complete title, "The National Archaeological Museum." My wife and I got a tour from two archaeology students who were working at the museum to help pay for their graduate studies; the guides were the key to making our visit worthwhile, so we highly recommend that you ask for a tour. If you like history, you'll be delighted with this museum, which recently started displaying remains of ancient Roman ships that were sunk during a Vandal invasion in 456. Many of the artifacts were in display cases, and our guides were very helpful explaining their significance. The museum is also a short distance from the Santa Croce Historical Quarter ("Quartiere Storico"), which has two churches that are hundreds of years old, and from the Basilica San Simplicio, which was built in the 11th Century. Wandering around Olbia and meeting its friendly people is a welcome change from experiencing the cookie cutter overpriced resorts in the area, which are very nice but could just as easily be located anywhere from the French or Italian Riviera to Hawaii. If you need an escape from the ostentatiousness of your nearby resort, the Archaeological Museum is a great place to start!

Found on the beautiful quayside in Olbia, this rather depressing looking museum on the outside gives one a surprise on the inside. Free entry and if you hand over your passport a running commentary as you walk round, essential as there aren’t many information boards. There is a display of ancient Roman ships and local artefacts all displayed with a very modern/contemporary feel. Not a large museum but presented in a very nice way. Staff were friendly.

Arrived after a lot of effort to actually find it from bus stop to be met with a member of staff who started by telling me they closed at 1pm .It was 12 10.Then when I asked for head set in English was told commentary was only in Italian which I knew for a fact was untrue.I could have made a huge fuss but what’s the point?Looked about and really wanted to see the old boats which I knew were there......no indication at all as to how to get to see them so after searching all over inside and out I approached unhelpful staff member and this time I spoke in Italian and asked about the boats. What a difference! She actually smiled and opened the door for me to grant me access.A result finally.Big Tip Speak Italian if you can.Why employ someone who doesn’t seem to are about the visitors?Husband was furious about whole experience.Glad I persisted as boat was amazing.

Visited the museum on a wet Saturday morning. Very interesting museum, but shame all the exhibit information is only in Italian. Guide let us into the room where the Roman ships are, which was very interesting. Definitely worth seeing

Yes it’s free! To get your free audio guide to go with your free entry you have to queue- but there was only one member of staff working on a busy wet Sunday morning and there is an unnecessarily cumbersome and slow system for ID and entry. They’d run out of audio devices by the time we reached the front of the queue. Said solo member of staff is required to open the doors to enter the first room. That adds 10-15 minutes of pointless standing around. Then to discover there are next to no written explanations of the exhibits. The exhibits do NOT speak for themselves. Poor.

The museum is free and is easily found by the waters edge, opposite the main street, Corso Umberto 1.
We received a warm welcome from the staff. You need to leave photo ID if you wish to use the audio guide. We left our UK Driving Licences, the commentary was in English.
Please check for opening times as they close in the afternoon.
They have a room with wooden bases from ships and displays of various finds from the area.
Afterwards you can take a walk up onto the rooftop for a great view of the area. If you listen to the audio the whole way through you need about 1 1/2 hours.

Free to get in, take I.d. If you want to use the headphones, necessary if you don't speak Italian. Allow 1-2 hours to see it all.

Buongiorno, per le visite guidate bisogna prenotarle in loco o bisogna farlo con molto anticipo?

Buonasera!
Io ho visitato il museo nel pomeriggio.
In agosto era quasi deserto....
Ritengo che, vista l'organizzazione del luogo, sia meglio informarsi per prenotare..
Saluti
