About
This mountain in Catania is known for being the one of the oldest and most active volcanoes in Europe. At the peak, you can enjoy stunning views of the gorgeous Sicilian countryside, especially magical at sunset. Other than that, there are also incredible craters and ice caves to explore. To get to the summit, you'll need to book a tour, which is also a great opportunity to learn more about the fascinating geography and history of the volcano from an experienced guide. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers, as temperatures can vary depending on the altitude.

- Charles_and_SusanNottingham, United Kingdom7,622 contributionsGood visit but still a long way from the topIt's certainly worth visiting but we didn't get anywhere near the summit. We took the cable car up and from where you got out there were plenty of views up and down the mountain. We didn't take the minibus/jeep further up - some of our group that did said you saw more up there. It was still a long way to the top of the volcano though. The village at the bottom has lots of shops and we took the road train from there which took us around the area for a bout an hour - I think the best part of our visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- Phillip LMelbourne, Australia364 contributionsWell worth the tripRugged landscape and the experience of walking around a still active volcano, make it an interesting day trip. There is a cable car that takes you further up the mountain, which, for those that did it, was definitely worthwhile. Alternatively, you can remain at the 'base' and do enough walking around and in craters and up secondary mountains. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required. For those less mobile, a miniature train was available for tours around the area and for those looking for a little more excitement, quad bike tours were available. Something for everyone. At the 'base' there are a number of restaurants and cafes (and inside, toilets), as well as the obligatory souvenir shops, which interestingly, had reasonably priced goods.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023

- matthirst11 contributionsUnique ExperienceTook a coach tour to Etna having precooked with package holiday. The bus takes you to the base where you can walk around the lower craters or take a small land train to tour around. The other option is to take the cable car to the next level followed by a 4 by 4 bus type vehicle (additional charge for both)still further. It was worth taking the cable car etc but not cheap. The whole tour cost over 100 euros per person. A unique experience however. One thing that did annoy was a large group of people wearing red helmets whose guide seem to think they had priority to jump the queue at both the cable car and at the 4 by 4 bus. Resulting in a half hour delay for other passengers.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 October 2023

- Aaron GLos Angeles, California345 contributionsTake a tour to the summit crater if possibleI have hiked Mt. Fuji, Vesuvius, and Paricutin. All three volcanoes were amazing, but they had one thing in common: They were extinct or dormant. Not Etna. She's alive and rumbling beneath your feet, a nice little reminder of who's really in charge (hint: not you). The sheer audacity of even reviewing Mt. Etna is comical, as if she can even be put in terms of good or bad. She is simply a wonder of the world, and you're lucky if you get to see her. If you do find yourself on the slopes of Etna, and are physically able to do so, absolutely, absolutely, absolutely take one of the tours to the summit craters - that's where the magic is. And even though everyone is all about the southern side (that's where the tourist industry is built up), necessity forced us to hike from the northern side, and I am so glad we did.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 October 2023
- DeefoodieLondon, United Kingdom233 contributionsAn amazing sightThe volcano itself is an amazing sight. What wasn't good was the transportation up there. The cable cars weren't working due to maintenance, I understand they are also not in operation if the weather conditions are not favourable such as windy. This meant we got the trucks up. The wait for them was so long. We waited near on half an hour for the one up to the first level, got off this truck & then waited at least 20 minutes for the one up to the top level. The queue when we got to the first level for people going back down was horrendous, they probably had to wait about an hour. Luckily we didn't have that issue as were the last truck back down. Also what wasn't good was the walk down from the peak. My husband went on the walk up with the guide & group. To come down the guide said we will take the short route. This meant coming down a steep slope which he found very hard to do & pretty scary.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 January 2024
- AMsaysThornhill, Canada4,905 contributionsStill cold, still snow around, still a great viewMt Etna is an active stratovolcano in Sicily between Catania and Messina, one of the tallest peaks in Europe. In its last continuous eruption in 2021, it spewed so much volcanic material that it increased its height by 100m. I went as far as the Capaninna Crater and climbed to that crater’s summit under Mt. Etna. Still cold, still snow around, still a great view. I did not go to Mt. Etna’s summit as the cable car, jeep/bus ride, coat rentals would have cost over 100 euros. Bought some “smoky wine” grown on Mt. Etna’s slopes, apparently Take warm clothes and book rides to the summit as you wish.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 February 2024
- Rohit K59 contributionsIconic mountainWe were lucky to see the “smoke rings” at Mt Etna. Other than that, the hike at Silvestri craters was a short and easy walk, with a nice view of the countryside. Not particularly spectacular. The parking arrangements are bizarre. If you come between 12 and 1 pm, you can only park for an hour and then come back to extend parking for half day — which is only available before noon and after 1 pm!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 April 2024
- Andrea KColumbia, Missouri388 contributionsActive volcano - safe to visitA fun day trip and worth the windy drive up the mountain. We opted to go without a tour group so we could spend the time we wanted exploring. It felt like walking in a moon scape🤩 You can walk up but I recommend paying for the lift and walking down, if you feel the need to walk. You can pay an additional fee to take up even further in a jeep.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2024

We enjoyed the cable car ride With a 4x4 ride then a mini included tour around where bus brings you by a wonderful guide It was an amazing experience !!!However everyone please be aware the ticket sellers will cheat you !! I paid for 2 round trip tickets which I was told was $134 euros (There isn’t any pricing signage and I saw different prices on internet so not even sure if that is correct ) I gave the young guy $200 he gives me some coins and 3 $10 bills and he walks away quickly !!! I was a little confused at first and it was crowded and I almost just threw my change in my purse as to not hold up line but realized he short changed me by a lot I’m trying to call for him and the girl nxt to him says what’s wrong I said he short changed me She smirks and says he’s going to get you change Hmmm really he has a draw full of money He comes back (Without change ) asks what’s wrong I tell him and show him what he gave me he doesn’t even make excuses takes my $30 back and takes a $50 and $10 out of draw and says ok It was bluntly obvious we all know exactly what he tried to do… After our tour I then realized he also cheated me out of coins he gave 3 $ 1 euro pieces instead of 3 $2 euro pieces I’m not letting this slide I go back drop the 3 pieces down and say you needed to give me 6 euros not 3 doesn’t question takes coins hands me $5 bill and $1 coin I say I’m positive now you scammed me it wasn’t an accident the girl nxt to him smirks and says let it go it’s good now…. I want a manager they laugh and There is no manager( after I try to explain what a manager is ) Just then another customer comes to say guy cashier and starts yelling at him she paid for 22 tickets for a group and he only gave her 21 answer sorry it was a little mistake !yeah right So my advice is count money very carefully make sure you have the right number of tickets and that they are return tickets . If 2 people were cheated by same guy in a few hours (and they are all glib about it ) I’m pretty sure this is some racket going on

My wife and I experienced the highlight of our trip to Catania with an extremely professional/enjoyable tour to mt.Etna with tour guide Simon. His knowledge of the history of surrounding area coupled with his light humour made the visit so enjoyable we did not want it to end. Simon is fluent in quite a few languages. Our group of 7 people all spoke English and Simon gave us valuable detailed information. We also visited a cave that was created by lava flow. Recommend anyone visiting to take this adventure.

While staying in Sicily we obviously had to take a trip up the volcanic mountain! We woke up early and drove from where we were staying to Rifugio Sapienza (the base of the mountain) and arrived at around 8:45am. We paid for parking in one of the local gift shops and even as we did that the area was getting more and more busy with people parking to visit, mountain walkers and tour groups. We then made our way to the ticket office and paid to take the cable car and then the jeep bus with the tour guide walk. We got on a cable car straight away which was entertaining and then walked through the cafe and got on one of the big jeep buses. The driver will wait for the bus to fill up and then will start the drive up the rocky trail further up the mountain which again provides some great fun.
Once at the top a tour guide will let you take pictures of the breathtaking view before taking your group up the short walk to the summit base where he gave a talk on the volcanoes history and again letting you take pictures, the guide was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Be warned you are 3000m high at the summit base which means it is a lot colder and very windy so keep hold of your hats and wear a jumper or coat. I wore shorts and trainers but some people were in trousers and walking boots as well.
I've heard people can go even higher to the actually summit but has to be specially booked with a guide and is more for expert hikers.
We were glad to go up early as it was fairly relaxed and quite. As we came back down the mountain the queues we massive to get on the cable cars and jeep buses so we were very lucky to avoid any waiting at all really.

Despite tense days planning ahead as everyone warning of snow and possible treacherous route up Rifugio Sapienza in winter season , it was a rather comfortable and enjoyable ride in our rental car all the way up. The road is paved and wide enough and brilliant, far above expectations, probably made even easier by our Seat Tarraco, a 4x4 upgrade. To be honest I could take my VW Polo easily too. It was a shame cable car was closed due to fierce winds and we couldn't go above the top cable car station where the 4x4 buses took us (still charged the 30€ each. Sorely missed going upto the summit but it was just not possible today. The winds up there don't let one stand upright! A must see sight nevertheless and don't be put off comments one can't drive up there...

Get ready for snow and cold! We visited Etna (south side, from Catania) in January and it was covered in snow and cold! We were lucky to rent hiking boots from a vendor there (5 euro) so we could explore in the snow more. Most people were sledding which was funny, but we took the funicular up to the top and then went for a walk up through the tracks. There weren't a lot of trail signs or maps, I think it would be much easier to explore in the summer, but it was very interesting to see it in the winter, and very beautiful. The drive has a lot of switchbacks and can be narrow at times, so be careful if driving! There are plenty of places (both below and at the top of the funicular) to get basic sandwiches or other food.

We spent 3 weeks travelling around Sicily in our camper van. A tick on our bucket list was a visit to this active volcano. We were fortunate with the weather, it was dry and having taken a picnic with us we sat in the sunshine behind the souvenir shops. Please note due to the elevation you should wear layers of clothes and some sensible shoes. This place is awesome. We caught the bus from Salerno and spent 4 hours exploring the craters. To reach the next level from where the bus drops you off you have to catch a cable car and snow cat and also pay for a guide about €79 per person. It is very interesting and worth a visit. This volcano has the longest record of continuous eruptions. The volcano has an altitude of 3329 metres and circumference of

Assuming that you are not going to hike all the way up (and it's long, steep and only for those who are experienced, especially at this time of year when you are almost certainly going to have to walk through cloud), it's going to be expensive.
We drove to the funicular, rode up, got in a jeep-style coach and were driven higher up and then head a very cold walk with a guide. It was 66 Euros each.
But it was wonderful. We went through cloud and then had glorious sun and snow.
We'll probably never do it again and for us it was worth it. I'm a walker, but would not want to do the difficult long uphill slog.
As for the rest. It is of course a tourist trap! And there are lots of options available for other ways to visit!

We visited Sicily in April and this was in our top 5 things to do. We had hired a car and drove there. The views are truly amazing... as long as you don't have a fear of heights as the mountain roads have 2 way traffic, and it can be hairy on the bends when there is a bus going in the opposite direction. At the site, there is paid parking and paid toilets before you go on the Lift to the first level. Had you waited, the toilets here are free.
Once you get out, you can hire a coat and boots for 5 euros each. It can seem like it's mandatory, but it isn't. It wasn't too cold when we visited, so we gave that a miss. The cost to the first level is 30 euros for an adult.
You can then take a bus for 38 euros each per adult to the next level and for the super healthy or brave you can trek the final stage to the crater. Alternatively, you can walk to the final stage after you get off the lift.
There is a gift shop and a restaurant at the first stage, but the food and drinks were cold, and I would bring my own or give it a miss.
The views and mountain are amazing, and I would definitely recommend this as a must-see if you visit Sicily.

The excursion begins at an altitude of 1,923 meters at thebase station of the Etna cableway, right next to Rifugio Sapienza. We received a discount card from Sapienza as their overnight guests.
We opted for the “Excursion Alta Quota” (ticket includes cost of cable car, 4*4 transport, and a licensed Alpine guide). The tour going to the summit needs 5-6 hours (starts ~ 9.30am, just when we arrived) and is physically strenuous, we gave that a pass.
The cable car whisks you away to the mountain station at 2,500 meters. From here you join a 4*4 vehicle that takes you to 2750metres. The first stop was the Belvedere on the Valle del Bove (an area that has witnessed recent activity) escorted by a guide.
After that we took another 4*4 with our assigned group to Crater Laghetto (or Escriv), where you can climb within and around the edges of the crater.
We were then transported back by another 4*4 to the Etna station which is equipped with a bar with a panoramic terrace and shops selling wine/liquers and local Sicilian products. We hung around (and picnicked) outside to enjoy sweeping views of the Gulf and the peaks, eventually, took the cable car back to base station.
The landscape feels extra-terrestrial, and views are priceless. An overnighter in Rifugio Sapienza is a good idea, we were able to relax after the hike, enjoy the Silvestri craters and La Capannina and also the wonderful grub at their restaurant for dinner.

This was a great road trip up and back to this amazing sight. We had great clear sunny weather, which was great for us non skiers. But like some in our family that would have liked to snow ski, it was low on snow & the tram was not up and working. So check before you go on snow conditions, if you are a skier it is like $20. for the day with rentals!! A wonderful price for a once in a life experience! So we shopped in the stores, enjoyed a small hike & picnic while taking in the beautiful views! Some of the younger kids rented a sled and enjoyed some small sledding rides.

We didn't do the jeep either so cannot really say but I think one trip up Etna is sufficient as there are so many other interesting places to visit. Make sure you get to Siracusa and Taormina also Agrigento if you have time. Palermo is well worth visiting also if you haven't been.

We will be arriving at the port of Messina on August 27th at 8 am, our ship departs at 20 pm. We really would like to visit Mount Etna, get as close as possible, visit the cave with lava. Is it worth waiting to book when I arrive there? (My budget is always short, so, if I can save anything, I'd appreciatte it), or is it safer to book it in advance?
Here in TripAdvisor I did not find an excursion that departs from port of Messina :-(. But I found one at "go-etna". Any more suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Written 2 July 2022
Always safer to book in advance-we were on a tour so we had pre-booked. We were there in May, so it was fairly busy.
