I visited this lovely cathedral right in the main Elephant Square of Catania, very close to the fish market. We visited during Christmas week, and even attended midnight mass on Christmas Eve and had the pleasure of seeing the processional led by the bishop holding Bambino Cristo.

Mooching around old buildings is a guilty pleasure of mine and the Cathedral in Catania is no exception. Destroyed and rebuilt several times (due to earthquakes), there is little bits of everything in what is now largely a baroque styled Duomo. Go in the off-season and you'll have the place mostly to yourself (if a Mass isn't taking place).

Our tour started in the heart of the old city center Piazza Duomo. The piazza is home to , U liotru, an elephant statue carrying an obelisk and the Cathedral di Sant' Agata or Saint Agatha. St Agata is patron saint of breast cancer patients. It is told that her breast were cut off. Catania is a blend of Norman,... More

We went for a day out with our friends of a lifetime who live in Catania, and after our shopping day in Via Etnea (THE shopping desination of Catania!), they took us for a break in this part of the centre.. and it's really relaxing to look at! There's this big Cathedral, home to St. Agatha (a HUGE procession is... More

Catania Duomo is famous and is one of the many other churches you will visit in Catania and Sicily. Open all day, one can visit easily, attend a service or just sit around and rest, all for free.

Very bustling and colourful market, many cheap and good restaurants, and nice facad of the churches. Climbing up to the roof of the church of Santa Lucia gives impressive views of the city center, the sea, and the Etna.

Have read that Catania is insustrial and relatively unattractive. In some ways this is true..a busting busy port with its associated shipping, cargo handling, commercial and industrial activities. I stayed in the historical center and enjoyed the attractions of Piazza Duomo, beautiful at night; the many restaurants and cafes, wine bars, shopping in the open market. Even the McDonald's was beautiful!(sorry, no... More

A beautifully restored mix of all the symbols that make Catania special, the Duomo encompasses iconic images such as the elephant (Liotru), the black lava pavement, the fountain (acqua o linzolu) and the cathedral of course with Agata's crypt. I strongly recommend going at sun set as the lighting is surreal. Visit the fish market in the morning instead! Enjoy
