It is a wonderful church, part of a very old monastery in Catania. It is highly advised to search for a guided tour. The monastery is now the site of the Language and Literature degree course of the University of Catania.

This monastery is actually used by the university. Tours are not available (only to the adjacent Monastero dei Benedettini di Catania offers tours), but because it's an open building (at least it was when I walked in) you can sneak inside and look around until...More

They must have run out of money to finish the outside but we enjoyed visiting the inside of this VERY large church. You are also able to visit the tombs - which have a beautiful modern stained glass of Jesus. There are some signs inside...More

It's a really huge church, adjacent to an ancient and large monastery at the centre of Catania. It is located at the top of a hill in the centre of the town. There is also an interesting ancient sundial crossing the church.

The Church is enormous and was built in white stone. Inside there are three main parts and you can go up to see the dome or the cloister. In the different parts of the structure there baroque elements such as masks or flowers.

The building is rather poor, but it's really worth waiting for the solar midday (it was 1pm) to see the sun beam reaching the calendar engraved in the pavement

Combine with a free guided tour around the adjacent former Benedictine monastery, now part of Catania University and an undiscovered gem!

I think this church is closed to the public. I did not enter La Chiesa di San Nicolo L' Arena, but saw the inside of the building from one of the shuttered balconies, during the Monastero dei Benedetinni guided tour. The church facade is unfinished...More
