There are a lot of amazing paintings and a lot of urns/pots over at least 3 levels. This was worth an hour visit but was dissapointing to not be able to walk around the inner courtyard or thought there may have been the ch Ave to see the upper outdoor levels of Castle.. there was one turret with a few chairs outside The castle is in great condition inside and outVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 March 2024
- genibre69London, United Kingdom5,264 contributionsSteep price but worth a meander if you love historyDecent enough museum but the €6 entrance is honestly too steep. That said I enjoyed the meander around and the collection of artifacts on the ground floor. The second (first floor in the U.K.) is mostly paintings. It’s no Louvre but some are striking, such as Love and Death and the Sicilian Vespers. All captions are translated into English. Nice views of the city from the roof terrace. Have to agree that unfortunately bathrooms were gross 😷Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 April 2024
- PaulMaryRCEastbourne, United Kingdom211 contributionsLovely castle well preserved and maintainedView from the top of the tower gives a good view of Etna. It's not cheap to enter but there is a great collection of ancient pots, stonework and items over the years. I would have liked to have seen a recreation of how the rooms looked but this is laid out in a museum structure.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024
- fssutton1Charleston, South Carolina885 contributionsGreat looking on second thoughtFirst off I will admit I made a mistake. Entering the ztl from Palermo I was fed up with the garbage, filth, grime and graffiti getting into this area and gaffed off this castle. Upon reflection we steeled ourselves to go look at it. It is amazing and well worth the time. As the sun goes down and the undesirable things are less visible this is then an interesting location for dinner. However,I would not linger long. What a shame Catania cannot sort out the undesirable tourist issues if they really want non Sicilian heritage visitors. It appears the Sicilians are robustly anti any comments about their garbage, graffiti and filth and they think all that is copacetic.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 August 2024

The lavatory facilities were in a most appalling state. It was a Sunday and the museum was busy so there were visitors wanting to use the toilettes. We informed the front desk that there was no paper and no soap in the ladies toilettes, one of which had seriously overflowed.
While there were plenty of staff sitting around, many on their phones, they said there was nothing anyone could do because it was a Sunday. This total indifference only receded a bit when we said there would be a poor review. Someone did then pick up the phone but we did not stay to find out if the situation was rectified.
The other bit of feedback we gave them was that the audio guide did not always coincide with the room one was in. The person we spoke to understood the issue and simply nodded, so likely it is a "known issue" and no one can do anything about that either.

We were staying on the doorstep of Ursino and decided to visit . Was so glad we did ! Built in the 13th century as a royal castle. Greek and Roman artifacts abound ! On the first floor is an amazing art gallery which includes a painting attributed to El Greco On the second floor is a cafe and toilets which we didnt visit. Absolutely amazing place to visit . Cruisers....when your ship docks in Catania , you can walk to here . Great area just away from the famous fish market and Duome . Plenty of cafes to sit and watch the world go by . If it’s raining this is an ideal place to visit.

Read about this castle online before visiting to get a better understanding of its history. This is one solid building, surviving volcanic eruptions and earthquakes! As a museum it houses a variety of interesting artefacts while its top floor had a photography exhibition to view.

Built in the 1240s this castle looks a bit like one from a fairytale book: rectangular shape with round towers on each corner, surrounded by a moat. At the time of its construction a stronghold not easy to overcome. All changed with the arrival of gunpowder on the battlefield, The castle lost its military significance.
The civil authorities who took possession of the castle in 1932 redestined the building to become a museum. Indeed, a good choice. I particularly liked the sculptures from Roman times (most from the 2nd century AD).
Entrance fee 6€

We'd been here several years ago, but took a stroll up from the Fish market on a very hot day. The Castle is the Art Gallery for the city and is worth a visit. If you are not into art, its worth seeing; before the great eruption in the late 17th century, the castle was on a strategic location on a promontory overseeing access to the harbour. The eruption poured lava around so that the castle is now a fair way inland, and you can see the hardened lava in the moat and part way up the castle wall. Remember that this eruption also necessitated the rebuilding of the city, and that this volcano is still active!

It was built in 13. century as a fortress of Ferdinand II. In the past it was over the Ionian Sea, but the lava of Etna reached it in 1693, so it became the part of the land. It’s a huge building, like a castle from the fairy tale. We walked around and took some photos. We couldn’t go in the museum because it was closed. I think it’s worth to visit it.
