About
Discover Mt. Etna with a geologist I am a naturalist guide with a degree in geology with more than twenty years of experience in organizing eco-friendly excursions on Mt.Etna. This project, since its beginning, has been oriented towards sustainable tourism with a solid foundation on ecology, natural sciences and ethics and it is addressed to travellers, naturalists , photographers, ecologists, walkers and free spirits. We organise sustainable walking tours in the most peaceful and primordial places of Mt. Etna untouched by mass tourism and we make sure that our activities have the least possible impact on the wonderful and fragile natural balance of the volcano. If you want to discover the beauty and the power of Mt. Etna and the web of relations that form this unique ecosystem, this the excursion for you!

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One could not ask for a better guide than Carmelo! His geological and naturalist background provides an in-depth insight to the Mt Etna ecosystem. Carmelo shared this information in such a way to capture our attention as we walked through forests and craters off the beaten path away from the mass tourism offered by other tours. We chose to do a private tour with four people. Carmelo is an excellent conversationalist. We all enjoyed his company as well as the tour he created for us. Highly recommend this tour.

Our family spent the most enjoyable day in the company of Carmelo. He is the perfect guide on such an excursion. Not only is he super friendly, funny and interested but he is interesting and very knowledgeable about the whole area, flora, fauna and geology which is just what we were looking for. He obviously feels passionately about Etna and the whole area and has so much experience of the volcano itself. It was so refreshing to get away from the mass tourism and not meet anyone else all day despite being on the largest tourist attraction in Sicily.
We were lucky to be in Sicily when Broom was about to bloom as well as other flowers and it felt very special to be at the same time amongst the beautiful birch trees and lava fields.
Thanks Carmelo for a memorable day

Carmelo is a wonderful guide! Far from the paths of mass tourism he took a lot of time showing us a variety of different habitats across our tour, with explanations fitting for every level of knowledge and a lot of fun. We happened to have our tour during the height of maximum blossom of broom trees/shrubs, which is a optical and olfactory spectacle. For our group Carmelo did the tour in English and Spanish with a remarkable ability to instantly switch between both languages. You can feel that Carmelo is guiding across an area he really cares about. So, Etnatao is a nice concept and definetly worth supporting, especially if you're interested in a tour beyond the commonly known paths. A day to remember, thanks Carmelo!

The private Etna tour with Carmelo was the highlight of our Sicily trip. It was a pleasure to spend our time with such a friendly, funny, helpful and professional guide, who has a deep knowledge on Etna, its history, geology and flora and fauna. We really enjoyed his passion and we were inspired by his mindset and respect for the nature.

We hiked on non touristic spots with amazing views to the summit, side craters and the surrounding area of Mt. Etna. We stopped at some lava flows and Carmelo explained the eruptions and the stages it will take for regrowth (btw. his English is excellent!). We had an unforgettable day and were never bored. We could have listened to him much more. If you are looking for a trip away from the mass tourism, we can absolutely recommend to book his tour.

Carmelo, Thank you very much, for this wonderful experience that will leave a long lasting impression.

Carmelo answered correct and fast to our questions upfront and promised to adjust the tour to our kids (5-7yr) pace.
We visited some side craters in an area visited and walked by locals (and other tour guides 😉) which makes it a quite and inspiring walk.
For lunch we stopped at a refugio to lunch in the area.
Carmelo was able to add context on the history, volcanic aspects and the nature around making it an informative tour - understanding what you see ✔️

The tour with Carmelo was a beautiful and very special experience. His love and passion for Etna and his job ignite interest and curiosity. He’s on a mission to bring more awareness to the impacts of mass tourism and creating a different narrative with his very unique eco friendly tours where he shares his knowledge on volcanology, geology, ecology, botany and philosophy. We highly recommend his tour that will leave a long lasting impression.
