About Etnatao Etna Excursions
Discover Mt. Etna with a geologist I am a naturalist guide with a degree in geology with more than twenty years of experience in organizing eco-friendly excursions on Mt.Etna. This project, since its beginning, has been oriented towards sustainable tourism with a solid foundation on ecology, natural sciences and ethics and it is addressed to travellers, naturalists , photographers, ecologists, walkers and free spirits. We organise sustainable walking tours in the most peaceful and primordial places of Mt. Etna untouched by mass tourism and we make sure that our activities have the least possible impact on the wonderful and fragile natural balance of the volcano. If you want to discover the beauty and the power of Mt. Etna and the web of relations that form this unique ecosystem, this the excursion for you!

We booked the private tour and it was a pleasure to spend those 7 hours with Carmelo. It was a Genuine excursion. Carmelo shared his passion about volcanos with us and has deep knowledge on Etna, its flora and fauna. We hiked on non touristic spots while Carmelo taught us about Etna history and ecosystem. Also, we really enjoyed his mindset and the fact that this excursion is respectful of ecotourism. Finally, Carmelo is adaptive, in love with nature and you’ll never be bored with him. We could have stayed 2-4 hours more if it was possible.

Carmelo is great and what you might expect of an old world scientist--if that makes sense. His emails were prompt and clear (he speaks very good English, we are native speakers). His directions to meet him were also very clear (he sent us geotags and that was easy to just click and navigate as we had an Italian SIM card). We had to leave a big early to catch our flight so Carmelo agreed to meet us closer to the highway. After meeting Carmelo, we hopped into his jeep and he drove us up to into the mountain. We passed through charming villages: he pointed out the history of the towns and also stopped at local market for us to grab food (we of course forgot to pack our lunches). As we entered the Enta mountain area proper, Carmelo began to narrate the landscape: the trees, the flowers and why they were growing at each elevation, soil conditions, weather, etc. When we passed a few lava flows (from the previous year), we stopped and Carmelo explained the eruptions and how long it will take for regrowth. It was really cool. This continued for a while as we climbed. (maybe an hour drive with full time education). Carmelo uses the weather reports and your interests to pick spots to hike. Our first location included remote walks off the trail through the forests and across lava tubes/trails. It was fun to go off the grid. Carmelo is educating you about the geology and natural landscape for about 75% of the time and the other 25% you are stopping to take everything in. We are fit so we wanted a fairly aggressive hike. Another spot we went to were the former eruption sites. Again we hike off trail and emerged into a major area. Carmelo explained the science behind the eruptions as we went from cone to cone. We finally ran into two other tours (large groups) but moved around them quickly. All of the rocks were explained and how they materialized from which part of the eruption. After a few minutes we were able to start locating the rocks ourselves. Our final nature stop was to former ski resort that was totally wiped out by the lava. Carmelo took us around here to explain how powerful the volcano continues to be. We spotted at a cute coffee/food shack too. During our trip, it did rain briefly and the temperatures went from warm to chilly to warm. So, bring a rainjacket and layers! Carmelo isnt' kidding. We brought rainjackets just for this part of our trip and it was totally worth it otherwise we would have been cold for another 5 hours of hiking. Carmelo will update you a few days before the trip to remind you of the potential weather. Overall, I can't imagine skipping a day with Carmelo while visiting Mt. Etna. If you have kids, he would be great and he tailors the hikes for each group so tell him your needs. Super informative, great English, and wonderful and enchanting hikes all over the volcano.

Carmelo was a brilliant guide, and we had a brilliant day. We started by learning about some of the features lower down the mountain, before going on a fascinating walk across woods and moon landscapes of Etna's higher slopes. He described everything in a fascinating way and was able to answer all our questions. We much enjoyed the philosophical discussions too! He was also accommodating to our logistical requirements. I would really recommend this tour, especially if you are interested in the natural world and in exploring the mountain peacefully and sustainably.

Carmelo is a prepared guide who has more than 20 years of experience on Etna. Going with him means hiking trails not touristic at all but not for this less interesting, learning the volcano, its flora and fauna in detail, respecting the surrounding nature. He offers personalized and easy excursions for everyone, pleasant walks with breaks and lots of explanations. He is a geologist and speaks English, Spanish and a little Portuguese. Upon returning from the excursion you will feel satisfied and with the feeling that you have learned a lot about the world of volcanoes. Highly recommended!

We strongly recommend to book your trip with Carmelo to all those who intend to visit The Etna Park away from touristic spots. The expertise of Carmelo in geology and botany as well as the passion he transmitted on his work made this experience a very special and joyful one. Furthermore, this proposal of ecotourism, showing respect for the environment and avoiding mass tourism let you spend an unforgettable day in such a special and unique ecosystem. Finally, the ratio price to services offered is for granted one of the best for this activity.
