Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The beautiful city of Messina, in the north east of the Sicily island. There are a lot of attractions.

We saw the golden statue of the Madonna as we sailed into the port of Messina on our cruise ship and so were fortunate enough to see it closer up than people on the shore The statue towers over the harbour mouth, welcoming shipping to the city of Messina and sits on top of what appears to be an old defensive bastion.
If you can get close, (or zoom in with your camera), the lady seems almost to be blessing passing shipping with her left hand raised in an open palm gesture. One of those iconic statues we will forever associate with the port of Messina.

What all the reviews fail to mention is that you cannot visit it. An unpleasant and long road walk brought me to the naval base, and whilst they were very apologetic not one step closer could be taken. It is clearly a beautiful statue that you can only see in miniature from the far side of the harbour (and then only through railings). Come on Messina, you can do better than this.

This statue sits on a jetty and welcomes ships entering Messina Harbor. Since public statues of religious figures seem to be disappearing in the USA, this one is especially nice and welcoming for U.S citizens

This attraction at the harbor could be seen from our breakfast balcony at the Garibaldi B&B. It's a monument of the Madonna dedicated to Messina. It's even prettier at night when it is lit up. Unfortunately there were not fireworks like in this picture while we were there.

Folklore has it that in the days of the Apostle Paul, messengers were sent to Mary, Jesus' mother, to ask her to write a letter to the new Christians. She was reputed to have done so, enclosing a lock of her hair with it. The last line of the letter was converted to Latin and is fixed on the pedestal of this golden statue of the Madonna in the port. It is translated as "We bless you and your city."

The Stele Madonna della Lettera (Our Lady of the Letter Monument) is on the tip of the spit that protects Messina Harbor and stands almost 200 feet tall. The brilliantly gilded statue of Madonna blessing those coming and going was such a peaceful sight. On the seawall base, it is written in Latin "VOS ET IPSAM CIVITATEM BENEDICIMUS" which reads "I Bless You And Your City." The monument was consecrated in 1934.

Huge statue to the Madonna at the entrance to the harbour - 200 feet tall, it was built in 1934. The inscription on the fort below the statue is supposedly the blessing on a letter from the Madonna to the people of Messina - 'I bestow my benediction upon you and your city.'
