Pretty Fountain

This lovely fountain will provide you with lots of photo ops. Maybe a little too much traffic to make it a perfect spot.

Visit the place by day and by night and read its legends. Visit also the little sandy beach nearby it.

Legend has it if you throw flowers into the Alfeios River in Greece, they will eventually emerge here at the Fonte Aretusa in Sicily - visitors throw a range of items into the Spring fed fountain - and there are a number of large fish swimming around in the pond it forms at the base of the Ortigia promentory. Fontain of Arethusa is in the historical centre of Ortygia. The legend says, that the fresh water fountain is the place where nymph Arethusa returned to the earth, after escaping from her undersea home.

This sizeable fresh-water fountain on the edge of the sea was the main source of water for the earliest Greek colonists in the 730s BC. It is the focal point of the island and all visitors go there.

It is unfortunate that to go close to the sculpture of Arethusa and the fountain you need to buy a ticket (which we didn't) for the contiguous Syracuse museum. This is a very nice natural spring water fountain located next the sea with wild papyrus plants, fish and birds. Its location provides for a great viewpoint and good photo op.... More

Fonte Aretusa is a small lake with fresh water near the sea, with some fishes and birds. Nothing interesting or spectacular.

Situated along the seafront this fountain is a freshwater Spring - once much bigger, and with a mythogival background. Watch out for mosquitos!
