The preceding reviews are misleading. Santa Lucia al Sepolcro is the traditional site of the martyrdom of St. Lucy, but it is not located in Piazza Duomo on Ortigia. It is on the mainland in Siracusa. Follow the website above for the exact street address....More

All the tour books and sights we looked at to prepare for the trip to Syracuse state that the Caravaggio painting of the burial of Santa Lucia once hung at the Sanctuary Santa Lucia al Sepolcro Church but is now in the Palazzo Bellomo Museum....More

The painting is in poor condition, hung in the wrong church, and there are far too many tour guides bleating away all day long with noisy and ignorant groups. Sorry, this is art as tourism, selfie-opportunity and it's just wrong. Not one the members of...More

As good as the San Giovanni catacombes but quite hard to find and three of the four sections were closed. I think three needed stablising for visitors so wasn't that dissappointed. Giude was great and the section we could see was very interesting

Walking back from the theatres via the Santuario we 'found' this wonderful church with the huge piazza in front - we could not stay for the catacombs and they were preparing the church with flowers for a wedding. What a building though.
