Having been brought up on the South Welsh borders, I'm both a sucker for an historic castle and also regularly disappointed by many of them, as they don't cut the mustard compared to the ones I romped round as a nipper. As we wandered towards the top end of Ortygia Island at the spit end of Syracuse town, I spotted... More

The best part of this experience was to walk along the tops of the walls and admire the views of the sea and Siracusa. Museum exhibit of artifacts found here is very small. Very little information provides about the castle.

We spend only 30 minutes there at it was very cold and the wind was beating us. You cannot visit the castle interior, due to reconstruction work, we have visited the interior courtyard and the walls. Amazing feeling and vue to the sea.

The Castello Maniace was built from 1232 to 1240 and is a good example of military architecture of Frederick the second's reign. It is a square structure with circular towers at each of the four corners and overlooks the entrance to the city's sheltered bay. Until recently it was a military zone and off limits to visitors, even today there... More

The castle was on a lovely site. There is not much inside, but we really enjoyed walking around in the sunshine enjoying the stunning views. It took us about 90 minutes to fully explore. It compares to an English heritage castle, rather than a national trust...not much inside, but interesting buildings and great location with big open windows looking out... More

The Museum is well done - but small and not well visited and is a bit "off to the side". The castle was under renovations - but they looked almost permanent. The site needs at least on cannon and some other interpretation material. The large entrance square needs shade, places to sit and out door interpretation panels. I hope the... More

Originally constructed in the 11th century, this medieval fortress was re-built and embellished in the 13th century. It still has some of the old walls with arrow slits. The central part is not open to the public but you can walk the walls and around a walkway behind it to see the long arched corridors. There are beautiful sea views... More

It is worth making the trek to Ortygia's most southerly point for a meander around the castle and admire the views out to sea. There are a couple of exhibition rooms before the main castle which could do with a bit more signage and explanation but the upper and lower levels are nice to walk around. Make sure you get... Go and see this if you're passing but it's not worth a special trip. Most of the castle is shut off for renovation works so you can only walk around the outside. There are two interesting exhibitions which are in English too and the view from the top is good. I think it will be worth a trip when it... More

The fortress is on the southern tip of Ortigia, and there are some very nice views of both sides of the island. The fortress itself is interesting and there is a small museum with nice artifacts and very detailed write-ups. Unfortunately, part of the facility is under renovation, and no brochure or information is provided. But for 2 Euro it... More
