From Ortigia you can get one of the small buses (2 I think) up to this Latomie for 1 Euro. (opposite is the war memorial on the cliff top) There are guided tours (11.00, 12.00 I noticed) but we arrived at the wrong time. Quiet,...More

This was directly beneath out hotel and very pretty. We didn't walk down into the quarry but saw much of it from above.

To walk in the ancient stone quarry is to step back in time, a place of human activity for many centuries, a place of wretched forced labour, a prison for defeated armies. Today with most of the quarry open to the skies it is hard...More

Nice park for a relaxing afternoon-walk - hidden for the sun. You can do the whole park within 1 hour. Check the opening-hours. And do visit the coffe- and delicates-shop nearby the round-about after the walk!

Latomie dei Cappuccini is one of the twelve ancient stone quarries in Siracusa and was my favourite site in the city. According to the brochure for the site this is the largest at 23,000m², deepest 30-40 metres and oldest at 6th century BC of the...More

Before I start the entrance is to the right side of the monastery and not at the back of it where the car park is which opens onto the main road. Luckily a monk had enough English to direct me to the right place. This...More
