Beautiful square bordered with churches and cafes with lovely trees and artists painting local scenes - we bought a beautiful watercolour to bring home with us. Standing by the railings at the front, there are fabulous views over the bay. The square is nice in the daytime but it comes to life at night when everything is lit up and it is full of people. At the edge of the square is a lovely cafe/bar - Caffe Wunderbar - a lovely place to sit for a drink and listen to live music at night. Definitely worth a visit to the square and the church of San Giuseppe.

On holiday in Taormina we visited this very pleasant paved piazza; a very popular location for people to gather. It was always busy with tourists; because of the balcony views that look down on the coast and take in a view that on a good day could be as far as 25km south towards Catania. Mount Etna is also clearly visible. The view northwards is not so spectacular as it is blocked by a headland.
The square is named ‘9th April’ to commemorate the start of the invasion of the island of Sicily by Garibaldi. It was just a rumour, as the invasion actually happened a whole month later on the 9th May (1860). Garibaldi’s invasion at Marsala marked the beginning of the end of the rule of the Bourbons, that then unified Sicily with Italy. The locals kept the (inaccurate) name because their spirits were lifted on that date.
The area now abounds with bars and restaurants, but the noise pollution from loud and conflicting restaurant music, for us, just detracts from this otherwise beautiful attraction. On the on the northern side of the square sits the Chiesa di San Giuseppe (built between the 17th and 18th centuries) framed by the cliffs beyond. This is a popular Catholic Church for weddings with a stunning balcony that looks out onto the square and part of the view beyond.
This is a must, but we found that the quiet early mornings, before all the businesses open, is best time to visit.

Just a square but actually a very interesting place to visit even if you have a rip off drink in one of the bars. It seems the centre of life in Taormina with buskers, photographers, weddings and plenty of beautiful people. There were even 2 drones flying around when we visited. The views are tremendous and you could linger here for a long time. You will come across this square if you walk along the main street.

Delightful square , which attracts people of all ages. Beautiful views towards Etna and the coast. There is often live music, close to restaurants on the edge of the square. Well worth stopping a while.

Everything has been said about this spot, easy to find and of course fabulous views over the balustrade, you will probably get asked to take someone's photo as I did but I was glad to oblige and in these strange times of paranoia it was good to speak to another human being. It was quiet with just a handful of people every time we visited but not surprising this year, otherwise i am sure it's heaving. Both day and night there is a peaceful atmosphere. You can sit around the side of the Duomo in the shade because it gets super hot. There's also a cool gelateria opposite selling the best ice cream in the world, what's not to like?

Whether you are looking out to the sea, over to the Greak Theatre, up the mountains or down the Corso Umberto Main street, this place is picturesque. We stayed in an Air BNB Panaramica sul Mare that was only 2 or 3 buildings away from here, right on the main strip, about 2000 sq. ft with balconies in every direction and really enjoyed the New Years Eve fireworks in the Piazza from our balcony! If you stay in Taormina, stay as close to this square on Corso Umberto as possible or you will miss out on the experience of this amazing place.

Piazza IX Aprile is a great spot to visit mid day with panoramic views, baroque churches, and shops, but it really comes alive after dark. We headed down after dinner on Saturday night. We grabbed a cocktail at the Wunderbar and listened to traditional Sicilian music and watched a joyful, colorful parade of locals and tourist. Festa!

This is an absolutely lovely piazza in Taormina but it is extremely crowded. It is THE gathering place and as such attracts everyone. It is surrounded by lovely churches and buildings, a fountain and of course the stunning sea. The views are amazing but we had to fight the crowds to try to get any decent photos. Still would recommend despite it all.

This main square is located in the middle of the Corso Umberto I. The name of the square refers to a historical event in 1860. We walked around and visited the old churches: San Giorgio and San Giuseppe. We took photos of the clock tower (Torre dell’ Orologio). My favourite place was the panoramic terrace of piazza. The sea and the smoking Mount Etna is fantastic. You can enjoy chilled white vine and nibbles at the tables of Caffe Wunderbar.
