Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We stayed at a hotel near Florence and decided to go to Sienna for the day. I am a driver guide and was with a family from the Philippines.
The fastest would have been the highway but we decided ti drive the scenic Chianty route and were very happy we did so although it probably took 3 more hours because we stopped many times on the way.
Our first stop was Greve in Chianti where there was a Local Flavors Market on the main square. We had a chance to taste cheese, wine, honey, biscuits, marmelade etc. What a joy!
Then we went to Castellina in Chianti and had a walk through this little medieval village. Great small boutiques for herbs, porlain, biscuits and local produces.
The scenery was enchanting and the drive was pkeasant and smooth.

I just returned from Tuscany and wanted to share what I learned driving in Chianti. It is quite simple, NEVER, NEVER drive the roads there on Sunday. The roads were full of bicycle clubs riding together and bike races were also taking place. I did not mind the windy twisty roads, reminiscent of my youth in the mountains of New Hampshire, but we could not enjoy our ride which was hazardous due to the bikes. On one turn a group of 4 riders riding together, not in single file, rounded the bend and one was in my lane! Later we saw an accident where a biker caused a motorist to swerve to avoid him and the car hit a stone wall. Perhaps next time I would be better off on a bike:) Beautiful scenery but as the driver I did not have much chance to enjoy it.

Lovely views of hills with farms and vineyards. We opted to ride on the well-maintained road through the forest--a good choice. We enjoyed the scenery and the towns. We stopped in Rada for a cafe and pastry. By then it had started to rain--no problem. We enjoyed a sitting down and chatting with the owner until the rain stopped.
Also, we stopped at Castello Bruio--what a treat! For 5 euros we toured the castle grounds--walls, gardens, chapel, looked way off into the distance to see other hill towns, and included in admission was chianti wine-tasting outside and a way down from the castle.
A way to spend a day

This was the best part of my tour to north and central Italy. I drove and the endless rolling vineyards, castles and hills were breathtaking. The traffic is fast and the roads are narrow and its not for all to take. Some of the best wineries and restaurants are in this area. I am unhappy that I did not spend more time in this region.

There are no words to discribe this wonderfull palce in Toscany.
Small forest on hills with excellent view itsother.
Many small traditional and peacefull villages, with a lot of fattoria wine producers.
The most beautifull villages are Rada, Castellina and Greve. It worth to visit to rest, for eating and drinking local food and wine.

We drove all over Chianti and stayed in Radda. Awesome views , rolling hills and if you have researched your route , you come across quaint little towns, forts and what not.
The roads are narrow and windy and you will have to drive carefully, but surely a route to do even if you are not a wine lover.

We took this road (SR 222) as a side trip while driving frm Bologna to Siena. We picked up SR 222 off of the Autostrada in Florence and took it all the way into Siena. It would be a fun road to drive in a sports car if you could be sure that nobody was coming the other way as it is full of twists and turns. There are a few places to pull out and look at the scenery and several places for tasting and sightseeing.

We drove the Chiantigiana from Florence to Castellina, where we stayed, and then to Siena. Used the wine route for a week or more and explored the storied towns, villages and many wineries along the route enjoyed all of the experiences. Varied scenery along the route from open rolling hills, to sunflowers, to wheat fields, to forests and vineyards - you'll likely see it all and it will become a wonderful memory experience. Highly recommended. ...

Unfortunately I cannot recommend this road if you are not a real wine connoisseur.
Before my trip I had read about this place like this: "The Via Chiantigiana is one of the most enjoyable motoring routes in Italy, one of the most instantly recognisable landscapes in the world, etc". That is not true! I drove directly south from Florence to Sienna through the middle of the Chianti Classico wine zone of Tuscany (Strada Regionale 222) and ... it was very boring trip. If you compare this road to routes: at Fuerteventura, at Gran Canaria, in Morocco or roads surrounding Italian Dolomites - Chianti Road is much worse. Almost no stunning views, just a wine fields and thats it Of course you can taste many sort of wines for free if you buy a bottle :) I do not recommend it.

We opted for the country roads and drove slowly with the windows down, breathing in the wonderful smell of spring in Tuscany.
I think if I could put Tuscany in a bottle it would smell like pinewood, lemongrass and gardenia.
