Started in the 16th century by Dominican friars, this is more like a museum than a perfume shop since it stocks an awesome range of perfumes, herbal elixirs and soaps based on, of all things, vinegar.

Although this pharmacy is one of the oldest world wide, founded by Dominican monks in the year 1221, it's nothing but a tourist ripoff shop. Only the picture gallery tells from its long history. Unless you believe in alchemy and everlasting life, you may just as well skip this place.

No one can leave Florence without coming here. Apart from the beauty of the place, your senses are bombarded with the most exquisite scents; leave your credit cards at the hotel or be tempted. If I remember correctly, this pharmacy featured in "The silence of the lambs". I come here every time I come to Florence and am always tempted.

It is bang in the city center and people would not notice if they do not know about this. It is absolutely beautiful inside and you can view the huge garden and the monastery from there.

You can spend a lot of money in this Pharmacy but it's worth it. Unusual perfumes, natural herbs, cosmetics for body and face, collection of home fragrances and more else. Pharmacy of Santa Maria Novella has a long history, it exists for several centuries. So it's a good idea to visit this place!

It is the oldest pharmacy in Europe and itself is a museum. You can buy fantastic creams, candles, aroma, soaps and different teas here. For sure you won't leave this place without buying something!

We enjoyed the history tied into this establishment and the fact that they still continue to use formulas and mixtures that are hundreds of years old! Absolutely incredible perfumes. We had a delightful tea in their tea room

Amazing shop but when you first walk in, slightly intimidating. I wasn't sure what to do so wandered around without going up to any counters to get a feel for the place. You begin to understand how it's set out and on the left side of the main room make sure you pick up the most exquisite product list printed... More

We had some time to kill before catching our train and so it was suggested by reception at our hotel to visit this place. So beautifully restored and still in use as a perfumery. Old stamp lists of items for sale available at no cost. Different rooms are used for showing off different items. Soaps and perfumes to mens lotions... More

I went after dark and the shop was so beautiful that I would recommend an nighttime visit to all. I ended up purchasing a couple of items for myself, but this is a great place if you need to bring gifts back for others. The ambiance and staff are great and you have a wonderful old world shopping experience.

This is a perfumerie where I now go everytime I get to Florence to buy certain products I love to use. Unfortunately, I don't get there nearly enough. My favorites are the aloe, I put it on everything from sunburns to blemishes. I also like the shampoo it isn’t thick like those in North America I feel it doesn’t have... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
