nice glass painting from the inside with traditional cathedral ceiling. the Piazza in front of the church is a good place to hang around on a sunny day, there is also nice sculpture about women slavery in the middle of the piazza

This church is by far the best I've seen in Italy in terms of information explaining different items of interest and what is depicted in all the frescos. Absolutely beautiful.

This Church is very near the main train station of Florence and unfortunately is just ignored by too many visitors. I was attracted to a side entrance where coincidentally there was a Mass about to be celebrated. I stayed for a very nice service with very pious people. At the very end of the day, I became one of the... More

Best church art exhibit we encountered. All pieces well restored and well lit; no dingy Baroque altars. 100% of explanatory signs in both Italian and English. Excellent self-guided audio tour, 3 EUR cash-only well worth it. Main altar and Spanish chapel not to be missed.

Visiting Santa Maria Novella is reason alone to visit Florence. You stand in awe looking at the original masterpieces in their original locations by Giotto, Masaccio, Ghirlandaio, Brunelleschi, Alberto, F. Lipoid and more. Leave plenty of time to savor and be inspired.

This is a huge church complex. The main church and all the surrounding building, chapels, cemetery, convent etc. The frescos in the main church are beautiful, especially up close. There was a line to get tickets but not so bad, but then it was November. they stagger entry to make sure that no so many at a time giving the... More

We went primarily to see Allori's Last Supper from 1584.The lighting was poor and the background dark. Much different that the other LS. This one done on canvas and attached to the wall. Wings extend from either side. Dog at the bottom of the painting. Difficult to photograph as it had a dark background and poor lighting.

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
