This 19th century piazza has undoubtedly the best panoramic view of Florence. The square is decorated with copies of Michelangelo's sculptures, but it's the view people come here to see.

We walked upto Piazzale Michelangelo from the Ponte Vecchio area. It was a long, uphill walk but the climb was extremely rewarding as it offered exquisite views of the lovely city of Florence with the large Duomo at its backdrop, the little bridges over the river Arno and the people lining up its streets. We were he on New Year's... More

Take a short relatively easy hike up to get a great view of the city from south of the river. The view is amazing and best of all, it's free! It can get crowded, but it's not hard to find a spot to take in the view. My wife and I went around 4 and waited for the sunset. We... More

A lovely, 'typical' view of Florence, away from the crowds down below! This is in a lovely part of town, ranked on the UNESCO world heritage list. Especially enjoyed taking Bus 13 back to the train station for further exploring through residential neighborhoods.

We hiked up in time for sunset and were rewarded by the panaromic view of Florence. While it was full of tourists, we lingered long enough to take photos and soak up the Tuscan landscape while being serenaded by a live performer.

I enjoyed the exercise and the view at the end. This is a lovely outing and you get spectacular views and photo opportunities. It was winter but still a great experience.

It's always crowded, especially at dusk, so if you don't like crowds then maybe don't go at sunset. But this place is where a lot of the locals go to see the sunset, in addition to tourists. It has a great view overlooking the city, where the Arno curves around with the Campanile and Duomo and many churches rising up... More

Great views You can easily catch a public bus and get to this place to take photos and enjoy the views, it's worth the short ride. On the way down you can stop at the gardens of the Pitti Palace.

Staying in Piazzale Michelangelo

Neighbourhood Profile
Piazzale Michelangelo
Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!
