Neighbourhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

Wonderful historical gastronomy, which has remained intact over time, especially among us Florentines but also among curious foreigners.
Friendly staff always willing to give you advice.
Here you can find exquisite Florentine, regional, Italian and foreign specialties.
A destination absolutely not to be missed.

I am American and I have lived in Florence for 46 years. Lots of tourists don't know about this wonderful "grocery store" and I think they should. Going inside is like returning to a quieter, old fashioned time. It's modern in the sense that a lot is self service but in some areas, you are served. If you're looking for REALLY top quality cold cuts, cheese, wine, cookies and sweets in general, this is a place you should not miss. If you are looking for something special to take home to a friend, or just want something to nibble on, I reccomend it highly. There are not many places like this left and in Florence, we are fortunate to have Pegna.

We had eaten at a few restaurants, mostly those highly advised on Trip Advisor, that were just 'so-so' quality in our minds and were losing interest in spending time trying to find an acceptable meal so we popped into the PEGNA shop, located in the heart of the city centre, recognizing the gourmet food name from our DK Travel Guide book. This was a very good decision.

We picked up a nice bread, local salami, a couple cheeses and olives and enjoyed the best food we had in Florence on this trip, back in our hotel room. The deli products sold here were very fine quality, tasting delicious, much better than what we are able to find in Hong Kong at our international supermarkets and food importers.

Prices were not cheap at PEGNA but they were certainly not restaurant-like prices and the food was just what we needed and wanted. They had wines and other beverages as well, although we didn't avail during out stop here. Overall, this was a very good stop for us and we can highly recommend PEGNA for picking up light food to have at a picnic or back in your hotel from here, especially if you find yourself tired of the Italian restaurants.

Another option is to pick up similar food stuffs at the Mercato Centrale on the north side of the city centre. We didn't buy from here but found some great looking light foods as well.

I had looked high and low for some tasty delicacies to take home with me to share with family and friends but everything everywhere looked stale and overpriced until I found this place. It's contains a treasure trove of tasty Italian snacks which all come in different shapes and sizes to suit your fancies and stay within budget. I definitely recommend a visit :-)

This is a Wonderful Food Store, within a 2 blocks walk of the Duomo, in Florence.
Discovered it about 25 years ago, and SO GLAD I FOUND IT.
Go to the ''South Long Side of the Duomo'',
Turn Right on 3rd narrow road past the Duomo's Bell Tower, which is ''Via Della Studio''.. Go down the 1st block, continuing, as little road narrows.. Passing by the 1 road on your left.. which is Via dei Bonizzi (also pass 2 on right) and you will come to the Pegna on your left / # 8.
>>This upcoming trip to Florence is our 5th or 6th, and every time, we've shopped for all above, to fill in the gaps, not wanting to eat at restaurants every night. We picnic in our hotel rooms, and study our choices for the following day...
I'm sure glad I saved a receipt from the store in my old photo album, as it gave the address, so I could find it on our 2nd, 3rd, etc, visits to Florence. Prices aren't cheap, but are overall reasonable.
If you want bakery goods, you might want to go by mid afternoon.
Best all around food shop I've found in the town's very center, ever.
Need more?? try THE MERCATO BUILDING, to the North/Northwest. >>>Be sure to visit Both Floors.. Wonderful for photography, as well.

For various reasons, I have finished up spending quite a bit of time in Florence over the past twenty years or so. The city centre has changed extraordinarily over that time, as has its food culture, in terms of both restaurants and grocery stores. This latest period of residence has made me realise how much Florence, and Italy in general, is edging closer to the European and world norm, whereby people shop in chain supermarkets, rather than specialist shops.

Pegna bucks that trend, at least for the moment. Shopping there is a fascinatingly arcane and highly aesthetic experience. It is an old shop (starting in 1860 as a chemist's before converting into a deli in the 1980s), and it has a wonderfully old-fashioned feel to it, even though it is fully up to date in terms of having a web site, delivering, payment, and attitudes of staff. It has amazing selections of ... just about everything, from household goods, to pasta, tea and coffee, tinned goods, wine, cheese, salumi, etc, etc, etc. Prices are not outrageous, though there are steep markups for some arcane foreign items such as Worcester Sauce. I would hate to see this place swept away by the likes of Eataly, now preening away on Via dei Martelli.

One of the best supermarkets located close to the Duomo. Good products, clean place and very gentle staff. Good prices for wines and cheeses (better than the stores located at the Central Market). The only negative thing is that they close early (7:30pm).
