I came here 18 years ago and saw pretty much everything and was very impressed (5 stars for that visit). My second, long overdue visit was made during the COVID crisis, so a bit hard to judge fairly. The problem was the whole Graeco-Roman floor was closed, which meant I didn’t get to see the Francoise Vase, or the Minerva and Idolino bronzes. The monumental garden and courtyard were also closed, so basically half the museum. Funny thing though, the entrance ticket was the same price. Come on guys, get your act together! My advice, wait till the COVID crisis is over and hope they have reopened the rest of the museum.

Classic archaeological museum housed in the ancient Palazzo della Crocetta (adjacent to the church of SS. Annunziata) which was the residence of Maria Maddalena de' Medici, daughter of Grand Duke Ferdinando; the latter, who apparently was not physically well off, almost never went out and attended the Holy Mass in the aforementioned church of the SS. Annunziata through a window located high up on the right side of the church, which the poor thing reached via a long corridor, still visible. The archaeological exhibition is very vast and although there is no shortage of other types of objects (Greek and subordinately Roman sculpture, the Medici-Lorraine gems housed in the aforementioned corridor of Mary Magdalene, the coin maker's room) the main and most valuable nucleus is made up of the Etruscan and Egyptian collections. The latter in Italy is second only to that of the Egyptian museum in Turin, while in the numerous objects of the Etruscan collection there are pieces of considerable value, including the sarcophagus of the Amazons, the sarcophagus of Larthia Seianti and the Chimera of Arezzo (by the latter, however, at the moment you will have to be satisfied with the copy placed at the entrance of the museum, given that the original is out on loan). The palace houses an internal garden which, however, cannot normally be visited. Definitely a must for fans of Egyptian and Etruscan archaeology. I remember that this museum, being national, enters for free on the first Sunday of the month (be careful, however, because on Sundays it is only open in the morning, until 2pm, with the ticket office closing at 1pm).

Open daily since January 2021 (check website for hours - Sunday varies). We spent nearly three hours and missed the Egyptian section but loved the focus on the Etruscan civilization and its incorporation into the Roman Empire. Major Etruscan bronzes such as the Chimera of Arezzo and artifacts from Magna Gracia- the painted sarcophagus of the Amazons- are highlights but the museum explains the interplay between ancient cultures through trade, imitation and the founding of colonies. Nice selection in the museum shop too, and the adjacent garden has recreations of Etruscan tombs.

Not everything was interessting. A lot of vases and stuff. But the Egyptian stuff was really nice to see. If you get a 5 day museum ticket for Uffizi then this ticket is for free.

So if you wanna spend like 1 hour 1.5 looking around seeing nice things. I would recommend this.

This museum is very close to the Accademia and entry was included with my Uffizi 5 day pass so I decided to stop in. The hours vary and it is not open every weekend so best to check the times beforehand.

This place is huge. Plenty to see for those with a special interest in ancient history. The ground floor houses a temporary exhibit which consisted mainly of ancient Greek pottery and small bronzes. The second floor houses more Etruscan sculptures and a huge Egyptian collection containing numerous steles, sculptures, coffins, and even a couple of mummies. The top floor has a lot of Greek work including some rare bronze statues. The jewel and coin collection was closed in the day of my visit.

Many rooms have signs but it would have been better if more of the individual displays particularly the important pieces were better explained. There were some video screens set up but they did not display any content. The museum has an app but it keeps requesting an update and then crashes which renders it useless.

I would not have gone too far out of my way for this but it’s worth a visit if you are in the area.

Make a point of visiting this museum to see life-size bronze statues of an Etruscan orator and the monstrous Chimera, among other treasures. But if you prefer the small and exquisite, visit the corridor upstairs where you can gaze closely at the ancient gems from the collections of the Medici. They are newly installed and well worth a leisurely tour. One of the best archaeological museums in all of Italy - which has many!

Our teens love historical war stories and related museum and they thought that this was one of the best museum they has visited for a long time. But you need to be quite informed about the subject to really enjoy the time spent. As a regular vistor it was only an average experience.

I have never felt this scammed in my life. In most of the arts there was no explanation in English. In some rooms there was no light so we could barely read and see the arts. On top of that there was no A/C. We were close to faint from the heat. Also, the exhibition of the second floor was closed. It was all ridiculous!

Having planned a visit to Florence for only 2 days, 24 and 25 August 2023, I had planned to visit the museum on Friday 25 August in the early afternoon. I was very disappointed that the museum closes at 2pm on Fridays.
I wonder how it is possible that in the height of the tourist season such an important museum closes at 2pm on a weekday.

The museum collects the best of the excavations from all over Tuscany together with finds from Lazio and Umbria. It is spread over three floors, all very beautiful and full of works of art. It includes an Etruscan, an Egyptian, and a Greek/Roman section. The highlight is undoubtedly the Chimera of Arezzo, an Etruscan bronze work dating back to the 4th century. B.C. depicting the mythical lion fair which is exhibited in a small room together with the Herald, a Roman bronze statue from the 1st century. B.C. which portrays the Etruscan nobleman Aule Meteli.
And now we come to the sore points...The museum is equipped with a lift and has stairs that allow people in wheelchairs to visit it entirely. Incredible, but true, at the entrance there is an architectural barrier consisting of three steps, to overcome which a person in a wheelchair must be accompanied by the service staff to the secondary entrance. To reach it you have to exit the museum and walk along a long and very narrow sidewalk. Once inside the museum, she has to follow the route in reverse, thus crossing all the rooms to finally arrive at the beginning of the route.
Finally, in many rooms there is no security staff present.
That's why I only give three stars.
