The area
Neighbourhood: Piazzale Michelangelo
Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!

Folon was a great Belgian artist with his own museum in Terhulpen (Belgium). But his work is on this nice place in Florence. Proud! The statue of the suitcase with the view on the city is iconic. For us Belgians ... a nice metaphor of this trip :-).

When you've tired of the hustle and bustle of museums, statues, piazzas and crazy teenagers on vespas, head over the river Arno, and up the hill towards the Pizza Michaelangelo, for the bronze replica of "David", and along the way stop for a rest in this beautiful rose garden.
A good 20 minute stroll, but worth the effort.
Cross the Arno on the Ponte Vecchio, past the stylish jewellers, and turn left down beside the river for 10 minutes or so, following the brown signs for the Piazza Michaelangelo.
On the way, you pass through the little "village" (more like a couple of streets) of Porto San Niccolo which is kind of a "left bank of the Arno" - very arty with one room art galleries and the occasional smart wine-bar.
As you walk up the winding streets, on the right hand side, you'll pass a tiny little (almost "hole in the wall") sandwich shop where you can pick up a take-away bread roll and fantastic local meat and a beer, and eat a picnic lunch like a local. You'll need to look out for it - and it won't be open before about 11am - but it's worth the find.
They have a small bench outside, or you can collect your lunch, and continue up the hill, through the "gate" in the city walls, (watch out, the traffic is a killer), and on for about 100 yards up Via Di San Salvatore Al Monte, where you'll come to the base of the steps leading up to the Piazza.
Don't follow the crowds of tourists heading up the stone steps, instead, just before the steps, look along the wall to your left, and you'll see what looks like an open "gated door" into a walled garden. It looks like a private entrance to somebody's garden, but don't worry - it's actually a remarkably beautiful public rose garden which meanders up the hill, is free, and has a beautiful rooftop view over Florence towards The Duomo.
It's a great place to stop for a picnic lunch.
At the very top of the rose garden you'll find a collection of out-door art installations, (my personal favourite is the suitcase view of Florence), and this eventually leads past the greenhouses full of lemon trees, and finally out onto a winding road, just at the base of the Piazza where you can re-join the tourists, and buy drinks and souvenirs at the Piazza Michaelangelo.
As a place to sit down with a beautiful view of the city with an Italian sandwich and a beer, the rose garden was a stunning find that my wife and I just happened upon - completely by accident.
Just don't tell anyone!
Have a good trip and take my love with you to Firenze. You won't be disappointed.

Lovely garden with great views over the city. Nice benches and lots of space to relax. Just spoiled a bit by the idiots picking flowers for their Instagram feeds. Seriously, people - stop. If everyone takes a rose for their picture there's nothing left for the rest of us.

Florence and its gardens are wonderful. However, I do not recommend going in August due to the heat and the crowds. In a city with few trees, all of the gardens that we visited were a welcome respite from both, but the Rose Garden only contained a few "last roses of Summer"
We also found that though the entrance to the nearby Boboli Gardens often had lines and required reservations, entering through the adjacent Bardini Garden provides a 10 € admission to both gardens and a back entry to the upper portion of the Boboli Garden.
We quickly learned to carry our own water supply as public drinking fountains are few and far between. Cafes with refreshments are abundant, but expensive.

Should visit when the roses are blossoming, at least in October. Sculptures, roses and view of old Florence. Convenient to visit to/from Michelangelo square

Whilst walking back to the city after visiting the Place Michelangello, take the time to strall through the Rose Garden with some statues of "Folon". Very nice and unwinding experience.

We visited in May when the roses were at the height of their glory. It was beautiful. Amazing views. Close to Piazza Michaelango. Be prepared for some steep paths, but so worth it at this time of year.

I know that we all have very special places that we want to keep to ourselves - well this has been my secret place for more than 20 years. Now, that the City of Florence has made it not just a rose garden but a statue garden as well it has found its way into many guide books so when I visited the garden today in late May 2014 with my picnic lunch to sit in the sun, smell the wonderful sent of the roses in bloom, hear the bees doing their work, I found myself in the midst of a small crowd of tourists who were constantly moving through the garden with their guide books - sometimes sitting or as I was lying under an olive tree enjoying the warm sun and the fragrance of this wonderful place - mostly, though moving through noisily talking to each other or on their mobile phones. So, now I write to explain the special place this garden has in my heart and that I have wanted to protect it from the crowd. But, it is now too late. I can only ask that those who take the time to take a few moments to sit and enjoy understand what a treasure this garden is - hopefully, those that don't / won't will loose interest and it will fall off the guide book walks and into the shadow of the notoriety of the surrounding attractions and we few can sit for an hour or so and smell the roses again without hoards of tourists eager to tick off another attraction thundering past to break the peace of what has been and can be again, one of the magical places in the world where you can find peace.

Based on the fact that there are only three reviews for this place, I am guessing this is more of a hidden gem? We thought this place was beautiful!! So peaceful and lovely. Beautiful view of the city and pretty flowers to look at and smell. Also the quirky statues by Folon were so cool!! We were pleasantly surprised to find works by this artist as one, he was French, and two, we happen to have several prints of his on our walls! Finding the rose garden was a beautiful surprise and a great respite for our tired feet! I found this place infinitely better than the Piazza Michelangelo that everybody goes too. I found it pretty tacky and not relaxing at all.

Nice garden, nothing to write home about, my roses at home are just as nice! The way some people were acting I don't think they had ever seen a rose before!
Good place away from the crowds to sit and chill. Rest rooms here.

Fuori la stazione (fermata "Stazione Scalette") passa il C4, che arriva fino in Piazza Poggi, a pochi metri dal Giardino delle Rose.

é possibile fare un picnic stendendo un telo sul prato?
Written 5 October 2018
No!
