This Tour met at the main entrance to The Florence Cathedral (Duomo), just opposite the Baptistery of St. John. I was slightly nervous as to how to find my guide, However she was clearly holding a sign for all attending the tour to see.
We were given insightful information on both the Cathedral and the Baptistery before walking around to view the bell tower and fabulous Duomo itself, this is the spectacular dome (The next day we returned to climb the Dome as our guide recommended it, and although very hot the view was spectacular!)
Following this we moved briskly away from the crowds and to my ideal Florence, cobbled, narrow streets with so much to explore. The guide offered a wealth of information as we passed buildings and shops in the quieter streets, before bringing us to a small church: “Chesie di Santa Margherita” We were the only people here, and in such a busy city this was a welcome moment to gather and digest the unknown information.
Next stop was Piazza della Repubblica, This is an amazing Square, with character and atmosphere alike! Restaurants and shops surrounded our group as we learned of the rebuilding of this square. Just around the corner we passed market stalls galore to get to the ‘lucky boar’ where we each in turn placed a coin in the boars mouth and let it fall into the great beneath, while rubbing the snout! (All because its lucky!)
Piazza della Signoria was our next stop, our guide described this square as a free museum, and she was so right…… I don’t think I have ever seen so many sculptures in the one place before. Michelangelo’s David to name the one I remember!!
The tour finished on the infamous Ponte Vecchio. By the time the tour was finishing (just after 7) there was a band setting up on the bridge, so we enjoyed a Gelato, the view and fabulous entertainment and atmosphere!
Great Tour, with a great Guide – Highly recommended!!
