Top ways to experience Mercato del Porcellino
The area
Neighbourhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

What you find here is a 16th-century loggia that has long been converted into a day market filled with vendors selling leather products and other items aimed at tourists. The market takes its name from the famous Porcellino (Bronze Boar) Fontana located here. Worth a brief stop to see the Porellino Fountain and Statue, especially for first time visitors to Florence and regardless of wanting to shop at the market or not.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 March 2024

It translates to 'Market of the Little Pig' because there is a bronze boar statue out in front. You're supposed to feed it a coin, and rub its snout for luck/make a wish. You can also do some shopping while you're at it. It's nowhere as big as Mercato Centrale, which can be a good thing. At Mercato Centrale, all the vendors are trying to get your business but here, you can kind of just walk around. There are way fewer stalls, so it's not as overwhelming. They do sell a lof of the same stuff as Mercato Centrale but you may find a few different items. I ended up seeing a wallet I liked/bought here, whereas I didn't see any I liked at Mercato Centrale. However, there are items that are more expensive at this market, so you really have to shop around, if you have the time. If you don't have time for both markets, I would say skip this one since the selection is smaller.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024

This is mainly a leather merchants market and there are a lot of stalls in this area. Make sure to bargain for the price. The leather products are really good quality (that I found) as Florence is known for its leather. Florence is magnificent, I haven't been there in years, wonderful! Too bad it's overbooked, full of tourists, all crowded into the same places and with "improvised" hotels and B&Bs that are all very expensive! The piggy market had no stalls that day, so we were able to touch the "little pig" (which is actually a metal boar), as it is said to bring good luck. The San Lorenzo neighborhood is beautiful, with many shops and leather stalls and many good-priced restaurants with typical dishes. Dante's home museum is disappointing because it isn't his home and then you can't buy the entire Divine Comedy on posters like they have outside the door.

On the day of the holiday I passed by and it was empty, so I looked at it carefully: it recalls the past! Next to the bronze statue of the little pig: a huge queue to touch it with photos (a good omen for a return to Florence). The next day the market inside the loggia: stalls, souvenirs and leather objects of not exceptional quality....nice....

I stopped by while walking around the historical center of Florence. I thought it was a typical market, but the space was small and the stalls were all selling leather goods and other souvenirs, so it was a market for tourists. One of my goals was to see the wild boar statue at the entrance to the market, so I stroked its nose for good luck. The nose of the bronze statue was probably touched by many tourists, so it was shining brightly.

Characteristic area of Florence and very lively for all its activities, but what attracted us was that kiosk with the word trippers. We took two cloths with amazing lampredotto, to the point that we did an encore, a proposition the tripe dealer is called Orazio!! !

It is a very nice market, typical tourist visit. Very beautiful architecturally like all Florence. It takes a short time. It has a variety of products and at reasonable prices, in some cases a little cheaper than in stores.

Mercato del Porcellino is a mostly street market selling a large variety of cheap quality, but at times rather expensive, goods. Still it's fun to walk through it and just enjoy the experience, particularly the ... meeting.. with the star attraction, il Porcellino, the piglet!

Near the Mercato del Porcellino, there were 4 young men playing violins in the pedestrian-only street. Their music was beautiful and I purchased their CD -
"Musica nel Vento".
However, when I got back home the CD was blank!

We visited this market twice during our most recent trip to Florence. The first visit was to see what was available for purchase and then be able to compare prices with other merchandise available elsewhere in Florence. The second visit on the same day was to make some purchases.
This small market tends to specialise in clothes , shoes, leather-goods and souvenirs. It has a large number of stalls crammed into a rather tight area under a very of portico. It was very hot on the day of our visits and with the cramped area and large number of shoppers, it was quite uncomfortable.
After having compared prices elsewhere, we made a number of purchases of bags and souvenirs during our second visit for the day.
This market could certainly be described as a "shopper's paradise"!

This is a group of amazing violinists.
I can’t imagine they would intentionally scam anyone.
The live music was phenomenal. My wife and I were mesmerized by their musical performances. We bought their CD even though I’m always leery that a studio CD won’t compare with the live performance. In this case the CD Recording was fabulous. It was beautifully recorded and mixed, and totally conveyed the nuanced depth and emotional quality of their music.
Hear them when you’re in Florence. Stop and listen for a while. Then give them a big tip AND buy their CD. You’ll thank me for this recommendation when you re-hear them at home.
