Simply said, this is just a beautiful church in a very beautiful location. Standing looking at the facade I just stare in amazement. Beautifully carved and so many details. When you walk around to the back of the church, I feel sorry for the person who might have to climb up to the top to make repairs. At least they... More

If you made it to Lucca, visit this church. While not a mjor sight, it is kind of interesting as it's front side is way out of proportion.

San Michele in Foro in Lucca is a beautiful Romanesque church with one of the most interesting facades in Italy. Its four colonnaded levels of gleaming white marble are inlaid with a menagerie of real and mythical animals. The construction of the present structure began in 1143 with some construction continuing into the 14th century. We are here to see... More

Had a local guide that gave the history of the church. To much information to include in the review but look for the ancient graffiti on the outside wall of the building. part of the history of this city.

You will need to stare a long time at this most interesting front facade of this cathedral. There are so many unique columns and architectural embellishments. You will want to take many photos. You should go inside, however, compared to the inside, the views are anti-climactic. The surrounding piazza is very nice and filled with many tourists. There are many... More

Pretty sure I could study on this place for days. I thought it was very interesting that all of the columns on the front of the church were different.

Well worth the time to see the art housed within and the art that is part of the building itself. The more you know of the history of Lucca, the more you will appreciate what you see here.

This lovely church is on a big square - a square that was originally the Forum (Foro). Built in the 700s, it is quite impressive (we didn't go inside.) It was a favorite of the Pope. It's unusual and historical - definitely worth a look up at the statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon.
