About
It is called the Leaning Tower or the Tower of Pisa but actually it was never used for defending the city; it is part of the religious complex in the Duomo Square and acts as its bell tower. It played an active role in both human and divine timekeeping with its seven bells – one for each musical note – the largest of which, cast in 1655, weighs a full three and a half tonnes! It is known throughout the world for the beauty of its architecture, for its extraordinary tilt, which makes it an authentic miracle of statics, and for the fact that it stands in the universally renowned Piazza dei Miracoli, of which it is certainly the prize jewel. And this is why it is one of the 7 Wonders of the World.

    Book early to avoid dissapointmant
We visited this iconic landmark in June-23, the weather was hot which was great, and the whole area was extremely busy as we expected. Due to this being a short notice trip (booked 3 weeks before) we were unable to purchase tickets to go up the tower and to be honest I think viewing it from outside was good enough, especially considering the queues we saw (top tip book early - really early). overall though the whole area of Piazza del Duomo was stunning, highly recommended to visit

Use the Skip-the-Line Option and Show up at the appointed time
Our tour guide arranged skip-the-line tickets. At our appointed time, we walked past all the folks in line and walked right in. Entering the tower on the ground floor is a little disconcerting since the floor is slanted at the angle the tower leans. And, the marble stairs have been worn down by all the foot traffic, so you should be careful climbing the stairs on the way up the tower. It's an amazing experience.

A must see experience easily accessed by train
A must experience if your staying nearby in Bologna (as we were) or Florence. We got the train from Bologna (changing at Florence). The site is a short 20 minutes walk from the train station with a few bars and restaurants on route and nice scenery with river. We booked tickets well in advance to get the times we wanted and visited all the sites offerings so made our visit feel worth it. There is also an open air market selling tacky things but the shops are quaint and authentic (this is tucked away over the back) the tower itself is really impressive and the impact when you walk round the corner gives you goosebumps. It's presence is rather like the Taj Mahal -surreal! I found it an odd sensation climbing the tower with it leaning to one side and I was a bit anxious coming down as someone held the qué up and did pull over in the passing point, I should have just politely requested they did instead of suffering in silence. I felt it was a must see sight and on the whole enjoyed it, in all we were there around 3 and half hours

    Beautiful place!
This is an iconic place of Italy, many people around the world recognizes the leaning tower of Pisa as an icon of Italy. It is a great experience to climb the leaning stairs and watch the city from above. Highly recommended to go with a guide in order to take the best advantage on available time.

    Amazing to see!
Yes! It leans!! Wow! Great tour guide for this small area of Pisa. The facts behind the building is interesting to here. In a safe, walkable area and near a few shops and restaurants.

    A worthwhile experience!
Thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the tower and cathedral. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking and well worth the cost (20€ entry). Would recommend getting ti the ticket office early to purchase tickets as they sell out fast. We arrived at 8:30 and found there were tickets for nearly all time slots!

Great view - lots of steps
There is a good system for tickets. We went without purchasing advance tickets but got in the ticket line and purchased them for a specific time later in the afternoon. This made waiting in the line to enter the tower much quicker. The view from the top is worth the climb.

    Exactly as described
The tower doesn’t disappoint. It really does lean! The attraction is well organised, only allowing 45 people into the tower every 15 minutes. It didn’t feel overly crowded and the views from the top were stunning. Walking down the leaning, uneven, slippery steps was a little tricky so wear sensible shoes.

Bought a Firenze Pass Botticelli + Pisa ticket pass from firenzepass.com. The pass worked fine at Firenze but not at Pisa. The web site and the italypass.it application says to contact them. However their email address is not in use.

Avoid buying tickets from firenzepass.com / italypass.it / milanocard.it. Prefer more well-known ticket providers such as GetYourGuide or just buy tickets from the site.

Well organized with limited entry meaning it wasn’t very crowded despite the larger crowds in the city. Great views but stairs can be a bit tricky without the proper shoes. No bags allowed so be sure to check them before getting in line. Advisable to pre-book.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is probably the silly photo prop champion. Get ready to swerve and weave around human statues trying to get just the right angle to “hold up” the Tower.

The Tower is an incredible piece of Romanesque architecture, a beautiful Carrara marble structure, and as part of the Piazza del Duomo is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unfortunately, the “leaning” part is the star. But of course without the leaning most tourist would probably not visit so enjoy the leaning but please dig a little deeper.

The Tower was built as a bell tower to accompany the Duomo. Basically Pisa became rich from sacking Sicily and wanted to show off a bit. Construction for the Tower started until Mother Earth had other plans. The history of the construction and retrofitting (even Mussolini got involved) is interesting. The Tower was an experimental site for none other than Galileo who was born in Pisa and taught at the University (the experiment part might be legend, but who knows). So you see interesting history.

Practical Information:
-Yes, you can climb to the top. What a view!!! Do it if you can.
-There are almost 300 stairs (I didn’t count them personally and the numbers vary from 250-300) to get to the very top and it is a spiral!
-Those stairs can get slippery, they are marble, so be careful. Wear comfy and sturdy shoes. (I saw someone in flimsy sandals and I thought please be careful!)
-You can’t take bags (backpacks/large purses, etc) up the Tower so you will need to go to a bag check area. It is free and watched. Do that before you try to get into line.
-You must have a timed entry ticket to climb up the tower.
-Buy your ticket ONLINE IN ADVANCE especially if you are going during high season. I can’t stress that enough. The line will be long to purchase an onsite ticket and there is also a very good chance you will not get a ticket.

If you didn’t purchase a ticket in advance and no tickets are available AND the human statues are driving you crazy. I recommend buying a pass to go into the museums surrounding the Piazza. I will talk about them in a different review but here’s a secret….the Museo Opera del Duomo Pisa in addition to incredible archeological/history/art has a very peaceful courtyard with a phenomenal view of the Tower without the afore mentioned human statues (see one of the photos attached). Also wonderful restrooms/toliets in each museum…with toilet paper!!! You cannot underestimate a clean, well-stocked, no line restroom/toilet!

Another secret…if you want to get a bite to eat and enjoy a spectacular view of the Tower and the Piazza without the crowds there is a cafe in the Museum Opera del Duomo. You can access the cafe without buying a ticket to the museum. Food is pricy but you are also paying for the view.

Had no idea of the scale and seeing the tower in person did not disappoint. The tower reflects Pisa perfectly. We took early morning walks at 6.30am and it was worth seeing it whilst the shops and cafes were opening. It was peaceful and tranquil would recommend visiting early although you can’t climb until the tower opens. For the best view walk to the back away from the main area and you will see this beautiful building lean.

We visited here as part of a Princess Cruises excursion. It’s a walk of about 10 minutes from the bus parking thru a residential area and then some souvenir stands and eateries (incl McDonalds) before you go thru the archway of the city wall and get a first glimpse of the tower and other white buildings. You walk past the baptistery and a church before reaching the tower itself. The road there is full of people getting the obligatory photo of holding up the tower. It’s quite amazing to see in real life. We sadly did not have enough time to get inside a climb the tower, given our time constraints on the excursion but really happy to have seen it.
