We took a walk up the hill to La Rocca di Montestaffoli, the ruins of the 14th century fortress above the town. we got a chance to take in the views of the rolling Tuscan hills and the towers rising from the town center. there was a harpist plucking out a tune while others set up their paintings. This is... More

A good escape from the throng of the tourists with a nice vantage point to look out over the Chianti countryside

Stead of doing the same most of tourists do, which is paying to climb the stairs of "Grossa" Tower, I went to the "Rocca" (a XIV century Fortress) for free and took the best pictures of the Tuscany Landscape.

I have decided to leave this attraction at the end of the visit of this town and it was the best choice since the views it offers from here from any position are wonderful and absolutely breathtaking. Apart from being a good place to take some photos it is also a place were one can sit and relax too.

We were quite sad that we did not get up the tower (we were 5 minutes too late) as we really wanted to get a good view from above. So, we were so happy to stumble upon this vista point. There are wonderful views of the Tuscan country side - I would actually rate this as #1 thing to do... More

To reach the Rocca of Montestaffoli and the best views of the surrounding countryside (this is free so no ticket entry to climb the tower) walk a few minutes from the Piazza Duomo and you will not be disappointed. This was the towns fortress which encloses an orchard-like public garden with olive and fig trees. Some stone ruins can be... More

An easy walk up behind the duomo (coming from the main shopping road). A lovely spot to get a nearly 360 degree view of San Gimignano and the surrounding vineyards of Tuscany. Definitely worth a quick stop to the viewing platform!

San Gimignano is a delightful town, beautiful to admire from afar and wonderful to stroll around. For a stunning view of the Tuscan countryside walk the short distance to the walls and up a few steps to the viewing point. There were only a few people here when we visited and the views really are stunning - of the countryside... More

Short walk, short climb, best way to see the arrea around this wonderful hilltop town. Better than going up the bell tower. Brring your camera.

Walk from Piazza del Duomo via Piazza del' Erbe for wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Well-preserved fortifications give a good idea of "medieval fortified spaces". The Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine museum is well worth a visit - try the wine, it is excellent.
