Breathtaking views of San Gim & the neighbouring rolling tuscan hills. A must see in San Gimignano!

Fantastic 360 degree views of San Gimignano. Well worth the 9 Euro entry price. Ticket price also includes museum and town hall entry.

My wife and I paid 13EUR each to obtain a pass that included Torre Grossa entry. Despite being Sunday with crowds in the city, there was no line or waiting to gain entry to the tower. We ascended the 218 steps to the top of the tower and enjoyed spectacular views of both the city and surrounding area. The steps up are 'grated metal' and thus allow you to see all the way to the bottom of the stairwell if you look straight down - those with vertigo are advised to hang on to the railing and simply look straight ahead and you will be good-to-go. The stairwell ends with quite literally a steel ladder that you must climb approximately 10 feet before entering the top of the tower - so anyone not able to climb ladder rungs should probably avoid this adventure.

Are you in a little city in Italy? So you must climb the steps! That's the rule. A narrow climb is paid with a great view of the walled city and the marvelous Tuscany!

Torre Grossa in San Gimignano I definitely worth the easy climb. Entry fee is inexpensive and lines are essentially non-existent. The stunning views of the Tuscan countryside are worth it.

The best view in San Gimignano - definitely worth a visit if you are in the town. The side rooms with religious art are interesting too. Quite a climb mind you with a steep ladder at the top, but well worth it for the amazing views of the town and surrounding countryside. Buy the combined town ticket to view the amazing cathedral and other attractions also. (Note that there are two entries on Trip Advisor for this attraction - the Bell Tower seems to be the same thing).

The tallest tower in San Gimignano is worth the effort. Once you get to the top the view is magnificent, on a clear and sunny day the distance you can see is stunning. You also get a good view of how the Tuscan landscape is shaped. That can be hard when you’re driving in the valleys.

The palace of the mayor is one of the most important buildings in San Gimignano. It is always worth to see, even from outside. Due to our short time budget, we couldn't go inside, what would been interesting. There is also a museum inside.

Torre Grossa is the highest tower in San Gimignano, a fantastic medieval town located in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. I am almost sure that it is a bell tower, where there is a very interesting museum of the history of San Gimignano, where you can see objects, paintings and explanations about the history of the town. Also, you can enter to the Pallazzo Comunale and see some official rooms. While you go up to the tower, you can see some very interesting videos about he history of the city and when you arrive at the top of the tower, you can see top views of this medieval town. Wonderful!
Also, I came here with my 3 years old daughter (in August-2019) and she enjoyed a lot going up and down, seeing the videos and hearing the music, and seeing the charming views from the tower. A top for adults and children in Tuscany, in Italy, in Europe and probably on world.

The largest of the famous San Gimignano towers and the only one that you can climb. Interesting as this tower is, what is the best thing about San Gimignano is that you get to see so many towers all in the one place. Of course there were many more in its heyday in the 14th century – up to 70 or more. Including Torre Grossa, about 14 towers are still standing and its absolutely fascinating to see them all in one town, clustered together. You get an impression of what the town might have looked like at the height of its power.
Built originally as defensive towers to protect the owners from attacks from outsiders (and also from other local families), the towers evolved into status symbols. Building a bigger, better tower to outdo your neighbours became a kind of informal sport in this town. Having the tallest tower couldn’t be a more ostentatious, in-your-face display of your wealth and power. Torre Grossa was built in 1310 and is the tallest (54m).
If you are climbing it just for the view (€9), I’d suggest a free alternative is to walk up the hilltop to the old ruined fortress. The views are maybe not quite as good but they are comparable. You still get a wonderful view back over the town and absolutely panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
