Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I arrived in the morning and there were vendors with their stalls covering most of the square. Most of these vendors seem to cater to the local population since they were selling produce, plants, fish, meat, cheese, and household items. There were a few restaurants bordering the square. This square is easily recognized by the church and tower next to it.

This beautiful piazza is the heart of this medieval town. So much history and scenery. Nearby, you will find restaurants, gelato, shops, narrow lanes and so much more to enjoy. Arrange a walking tour to get more information and perspective.

Piazza del Duomo is a city square in beautiful San Gimignano. Today the Piazza Duomo is still the heart of San Gimignano, just as it was the centre of political and religious life in the Middle Ages. If the Duomo is the religious symbol of San Gimignano, the Palazzo del Popolo represents his civic symbol. Together, a few meters from each other, they form the unique architectural group of the Cathedral Square. The most imposing building is the Collegiata, it is at the centre, overpowering the piazza with its bulk as it sits on high atop a stairway. Exactly opposite is the Palazzo Vecchio del Podestà with the Torre Rognosa and the Torre Chigi alongside. The Collegiata, also know as the Duomo, gives its name to the piazza and has been there since the 11th century. In the first half of the 13th century, during the period of greatest economic prosperity, the piazza assumed the appearance it still has today. The main public buildings were built here, and the façade of the Duomo was rotated to face the Palazzo Vecchio del Podestà. It is a brick, trapezoid-shaped space with a slight slope, adding to the wonder of those who upon entering find themselves all of a sudden at the centre of the Middle Ages. Three important medieval buildings face one another here: On the north side, projecting up into the sky, are the Torri Gemelle dei Salvucci. On the opposite side is the Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà with the Loggia del Comune. Beside it is the massive Torre Grossa.

The Duomo is in the exact center of San Gimignano, just around the corner from Dondoli, the world champion gelato shop and Ricca pizza a hole-in-the-wall place that has excellent take out pizza. Grab a cone or buy a piece then sit down on the steps of the Duomo and watch the world go by.

This is an excellent location to visit in San Gimignano. Just of the main square area. The Church is a lively old building. The steps rise up in front making the building look imposing. There are many old buildings here including the local Council offices. Many different shops and bar, cafes adorn this part of the town. You have quite a climb up hill in all directions to reach the area.

It wasn't hard to decide how many points should I give this place since I gave five to the whole town. Every corner, every building, every stone is an attraction, and Piazza del Duomo isn't an exception. The Duomo, the Palazzo Delle Communale, and the streets are leading you to see new miracles.
The Piazza has two faces. While tourists are busily walking to see as much as possible, locals are sitting and chatting on a bench. San Gimignano was one of the biggest presents to me while touring in Tuscany.

Pleasant small piazza adjacent to the Duomo church. The church has a plain exterior but a sensational frescoed interior

This church (or cathedral) doesn’t look very interesting from the outside, but it’s well worth buying the ticket to visit as the ceiling and walls are beautifully painted. The ceiling is blue with stars, the walls covered in frescoes which tell various stories form the old and new testaments. It’s amazing to see such bright colours, and to know that the figures probably represent people living in the medieval period in the area.
