About
The magnificent complex of the Cathedral of Siena, its Duomo, houses a series of some of the most important monuments of the European artistic panorama. With its more than one million visitors every year, the Cathedral without a doubt represents the fulcrum of the entire complex, while other significant elements include the Crypt, the Baptistery and the Museo dell'Opera, all part of the impressive mass formed by the "Duomo Vecchio" (Old Cathedral), and the "Duomo Nuovo" (New Cathedral). Visitors will travel along a memorable itinerary to the discovery of self and the truth of faith through culture and art, the result of more than a millennium of Western history.

- Nicole f4 contributionsDO ITNOT TO BE MISSED. Best cathedral we saw in our entire trip to Florence. Highly recommend! Beautiful and stunning outside, interesting inside. Siena is a really great place to visit for a true feel for a mideival town that's not as bustling and busy as Florence.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 October 2023
- ksufan88Wichita, Kansas6,633 contributionsGorgeous cathedralThis huge cathedral can be seen easily from a distance but as you get closer to it, it becomes hidden by the surrounding buildings until you round a corner and are amazed by its beautiful facade. To enter, you must purchase a ticket (5 euros) to the left of the entrance. There are also other combination tickets that let you see additional parts of the cathedral complex. We purchased the 20 euro ticket that included the rooftop ‘Gates of Heaven’, nearby museum with a great view of the cathedral, baptistery and crypt. The price wasn’t cheap, but this let us fully experience everything that the cathedral had to offer.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2023

- Eva Rivera BruguesToledo, Spain45 contributionsItaly's most exquisite cathedral!Italy's most exquisite cathedral! The interior's lofty ceilings, floor-to-ceiling marble mosaics, columns of black and white marble, and elaborate sculptures really left me speechless. There's also the beautiful ceiling in the library. To exchange your pass for a genuine ticket if you bought yours through GetYourGuide, you have to line up on the LEFT side of the cathedral. After that, you can enter the cathedral without having to wait in line.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 March 2024
- fredpRednal, United Kingdom159 contributionsSpectacular, both inside and outsideA not to be missed call if in Sienna. The outside is spectacular and there can be long queues to see the inside but that is even more mind blowing and well worth the wait. Unfortunately, as I found out, you need to queue up twice. Once to get the ticket and then a second time to get in, I went late afternoon and it was not as bad as when I was there earlier in the day.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 May 2024
- openmind99Picton, Canada43 contributionsDo Not Miss the Duomo di SienaWe recommend that you buy the Porta del Cielo all inclusive pass at the Duomo. Depending on the time of day you may have to line up to purchase the ticket but it was well worth the money. It grants you entrance to the Duomo, Crypt, Battistero, the Library, the Museo dell’Opera and the Porta del Cielo. The ticket is good for three days, one admission to each feature. The views from the Porta del Cielo tour are stunning! This is the only part of the ticket for which you must book a time. WARNING!! This tour and a visit to the Panorama in the Museo dell’Opera Are NOT for those afraid of heights, suffer from claustrophobia or those persons with mobility issues—there are well over 70 steps to climb just to begin these two features and very narrow walkways to navigate. Having said that—do Not miss the stunning artwork and views if you are lucky enough to be in Siena.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024
- c kTexas33 contributionsTake your time and try to soak it all in!This was probably the most beautiful cathedral we saw during our 15 days in Italy. The one in Florence may be bigger, but this one may be even more stunning. We purchased our tickets mid-day, no line, no crowds. So much to see - be sure and look up, down and all directions... every surface is just incredible.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 June 2024
- Nigel PlannerNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom12 contributionsTop visit in SienaWe visited the Duomo today. The ticket office line was well organised and quick. We bought the full ticket including all attractions. This was a little more expensive, but well worth it. The Gate of Heaven visit adds €5 per person, but you get to walk through the roof spaces, looking down into the cathedral and then out onto the edge of the dome. The views are amazing, both inside and out. Other attractions include the Piccolomini Library, the crypt, the baptistery, the museum and the very high walk along the walls of the new cathedral, which only has one wall! Add to this amazing marble floors, stunning ceilings and many beautiful statues, this is a cathedral worthy of your time. We spent four hours seeing everything.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 July 2024
- ThorwaldVikingAsgaarWinter Park, Florida182 contributionsDuomo di Siena / Siena, ItalySiena Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Siena) is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. It was the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Siena, and from the 15th century that of the Archdiocese of Siena. It is now the seat of the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino. The cathedral was designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The dome was completed in 1264. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The bell tower has six bells, where the oldest one was cast in 1149. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with the addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius. There are thirty-five statues of prophets and patriarchs grouped around the virgin. The finest Italian artists of that era completed works in the cathedral. These artists were Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello, Pinturicchio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Bernini.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 September 2024
- Traveling MarioSeoul, South Korea2,646 contributionsBeautiful FloorThis is the number one attraction of Siena, especially when the marble inlay floor is uncovered. The marble inlay art that covers the entire floor of the church is simply impressive. The floor is uncovered only during some periods of the year. It is highly recommended to check the schedule before planning a trip to Siena. There is a guided tour of the upper part of the cathedral, Porta del Cielo (Gateway to Heaven), which allows a bird's-eye-view of the floor. It is also recommended and requires advance reservation. The Piccolomini Library that is connected to the cathedral is a beautiful hall with a collection of old music scores.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 September 2024

Duomo di Siena was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to the town. We bought the all in one ticket from the ticket office opposite the entrance to the cathedral for around 10 euros, which is fantastic value for money considering what is included. The centre point is of course the cathedral itself which is absolutely stunning inside. Personally, I found it more impressive than the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, and that’s saying something. The floor, as I’m sure you’ve heard about it in other reviews is beautiful, and so is the library which you will find on the left side of the cathedral.
The ticket also included access to the crypt which was nothing amazing but worthwhile doing considering its included. Access to the museum is also included (separate building), which was relatively small, but this is how you access the vantage point. The steps are narrow, but fortunately, I don’t remember there being too many of them. Once you’ve scaled them, you will be treated with a panoramic view of Siena, and the surrounding Tuscany countryside. Of course, you’ll also get a good view of the cathedral itself. I’d say leaving yourself around 2 hours to do everything associated with the ticket should be enough.

Bought the combination ticket to see Duomo, baptistery, crypt etc plus cupola for €20 per person. Did not do it on line as that would add €4 to the overall cost and couldn’t get the cupola on line. Got there at 10.20 no queue to buy the combo ticket (but big queue for just the cathedral). Only bit where you get a timed ticket is for the cupola, we got 16.00.
Cathedral was excellent, particularly as floor was exposed (Sep to early Oct). Crypt and Baptistry are good. Some wacky modern art in the museum. Only disorganized bit was the trip onto
The Panorama dai Facciatone (top of the incomplete new cathedral wall) where you are forced (get shouted at if you try to bypass!) to go from room to room, are kept to queue up from one room to the next just to slow things down, and then a 40 min queue to access the roof. Great view though.
Cupola well worth the visit with views into the church, of the floors, and of the city.

Duomo di Siena (the Cathedral) is located in the old town of Siena, a charming town in Tuscany Region, in the center of Italy. It is one of the most wonderful buildings in the old town. The main building was built in 13th Century and the bell tower was finished 2 centuries after. It has a characteristic facade in white and black alternating stripes, which represents the two legendary horses that were the founders of the city. Really a beautiful history. From the Cathedral, you can see great views of the cathedral, so I recommend especially to come here and enjoy. Too in the town and probably in Italy.

I only queued for about 20 minutes to get my ticket and this was around midday when it was busy but decided against going up into the dome. Getting the ticket on the day was easy so I'd recommend this method rather than booking onine.
The interior of the Cathedral is certainly worth paying to see. The architecture and design are very interesting and there are plenty of things to see and good photos to take (no flash or tripods are allowed). The reason for 1 star coming off is because it was still a short experience despite me doing the full ticket for the smaller museums and art galleries and taking in and reading as much as I could.

This church deserves to be visited calmly in order to appreciate all the works preserved inside. I recommend using the OPA SI Pass cumulative ticket, with which is included a handy guidebook that you can download directly to your cell phone. Very interesting are the wooden votive poles to the Madonna. They are veterans of a war that was fought by Siena against Florence and, even today, are kept here in memory of Victory.

The highlight of our visit to Siena. Extremely detailed on the outside and the black and white design on the inside is stunning.
I would also recommend buying the ticket that takes you on a tour around the roof of the cathedral, as the views are incredible, both of the inside and outside.

We admired the Duomo di Siena first from a distance as we approached and then from the square in front. The facade has been beautifully restored and it was really interesting to look at all the details. You have to pay to enter this Catholic cathedral, the seat to the Bishop of Siena, this is so strange!

We were amazed at the first look at the Duomo. Her beauty leaves no one indifferent. It is one of the most famous churches in Italy and one of the greatest wonders in the history of art of all time. In the architectural, pictorial and sculptural fields, it fascinates all sorts of visitors or curious people who stop to admire it. The cathedral is extremely fascinating and it is a privilege to be in this space. Duomo di Siena is a medieval church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral was designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius. Senius and Aschius are the two legendary founders of Siena. They were brothers, sons of Remus and thus Romulus was their uncle. The finest Italy artists, during that time, completed works in the Cathedral. These artists were Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello ( St. John the Baptist ), Pinturicchio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Bernini. The cathedral's valuable pieces of art including The Feast of Herod by Donatello, and works by Bernini and the young Michelangelo ( Saint Paul sculpture ) make it an extraordinary museum of Italian sculpture. It also delights us the beautiful church floor. The inlaid marble mosaic floor is one of the most ornate of its kind in Italy, covering the entire floor of the cathedral. This venture went from the 14th to the 16th centuries, and about forty artists made their contributions. The floor consists of 56 panels in different sizes. They represent the sibyls, scenes from the Old Testament, allegories and virtues. Most are still in their original state. We can further admire the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, the Chigi Chapel, the Baptistry and the Piccolomini Library. Extremely fascinating cathedral.

This place was simply stunning with so many precious work of arts! The marble floor is an absolute masterpiece with so many stories beautifully created by artisans ages ago. Yellow marble - unique to these areas- has a very vibrant colour and looks like gold. We booked tickets in advance on their website as they have Covid measures in place. At the entrance they do temperature checks which is a good thing.
The Pope library is currently closed for restoration. We also saw works by Michelangelo around one of the chapels next to it.

There are 35 statues of prophets and patriarchs grouped around the virgin. Three large mosaics can be seen on the gables of the facade - the large central mosaic shows the Coronation of the Virgin, the smaller mosaics on each side show Nativity of Jesus and Presentation of Mary in the Temple. In the interior, we were amazed by the black and white marble stripes on the walls and columns. Impressive dome and nave. Saw too the valuable pieces of art. Saw funeral monument. And tombstone.

Where can I find the duomo's ticket office and when does it open? Also are the lines at the ticket office long early in the morning in August?

This ticket office moves around. In July 2022 it was to the left side of the Duomo (as you face the front of the Duomo). I was there on a Wednesday in mid-July, around 10:30 - 11. The line was very short.

In 2 abbiamo speso 50€
