The church is very beautiful, and inside it is the tomb of Santa Chiara. The only problem in the experience was that there were a lot of guided tours with teenagers, probably from schools, in the church, and they were very noisy. In such a place, I believe it should demand more respect.

A church in Assisi where the remains of Saint Clare is kept. Saint Clare was the founder of poor ladies and currently known as order of Saint Clare. The place was so holy that taking photos was not allowed. Very privileged as a Catholic to have visited this place with my elderly mother who traveled all the way from Asia.

This is tucked away but distinctive due to large boulders supporting the church on the outside. Inside lovely art work dating back to the 13 century. The body of St Chiara is resting there. Nearby the 'shop' of St Francis's parents and a statue of them near to the Basilica di Santa Chiara.

Assisi is an amazingly beautiful city. Definitely worth the time to visit! I only briefly visited this place during a Tuk Tuk tour of the City. The area is extremely amazing to see and was not packed with tourists.

I preferred this church to many others visited in the city . A much more enjoyable experience, even compared to the Cathedral of St. Francis. The people are much better managed, there are no crowds and you can enjoy the beauty of the church and the relics in it.

This is a fascinating church that complements a visit to St. Francis' Basilica. We had a guided tour which helped us understand the significance including the crucifix that inspired Francis. The interior is beautiful and I highly recommend a visit if you are in Assisi.

Like most people, we came to Assisi to see the Basilica of St Francis. It is, quite rightly, the star attraction in Assisi but even if you have a very tight itinerary, you should try to visit St Clare’s next.
The two basilicas are at opposite sides of the city but it is a very walkable distance (12-15 minutes). Which one you visit first really depends on where you park. We parked at the Mojano carpark which is very close to St Clare’s so we went there first.
The Basilica’s facade is immediately striking. Horizontal bands of white and pink stone and a single wheel-like rose window are very lovely but it is the arches of the oversized flying buttresses on the left hand side that dominate.
At first the piazza in front of the basilica looks a bit grim. The water in the central fountain was a bright algae-green colour which detracted from the overall look of the piazza. Don’t be put off and instead, walk over to the side wall, where there is a beautiful and expansive view over the countryside.
Inside there are two main highlights.
i) The first is the 12th century Crucifix that St Francis knelt in front of to pray. This is the crucifix that spoke to him, urging him to repair and reform the church. It was a profound and life-changing moment that set him on his path towards founding the Franciscan order and sainthood.
ii) Secondly, the body of St Clair, is interred in the crypt. Saint Clare, rejected her family’s bourgeois lifestyle and escaped in the middle of the night to became one of the first followers of St Francis and the founder of the Poor Clares order. She lived a simple life of poverty and austerity, serving the sick and poor. She died in Assisi in 1253 and was almost immediately canonised in 1255.
Entry is free and, unlike the Basilica if St Francis, photos are allowed.

In July 2007, on a lovely summer day, I was privileged to visit this lovely Basilica of St Claire - a visit I will always remember.

In this Basilica, as I descend the steps into the basement, besides seeing a statue of Santa Chiara - her incorrupt body laid beneath a porcelain like casing and this in itself is a sight to behold, for those of us who know about her and the way she lived her simple life in Assisi.

As I strolled along the glass casing which displayed her relics - from her garment to a lock of her crowning glory, I was simply awestruck...

This Basilica is located within walking distance from St Anthony's Guesthouse and it is located in a direction which "faces" the Basilica of St Francis - and these 2 basilicas are separated by a long walk, filled with cobblestone pavements, which the pilgrim - the first time visitor to Assisi, would enjoy and relish...

Besides a place of pilgrimage and prayer, this lovely Basilica of St Claire is a monument which highlights the simplicity, the joy and the peace of a simple lady who lived simply so that others can live.

When you visit Assisi - if time permits, do drop by to this "lesser known Basilica" and be pleasantly surprised by what awaits you - in a simple, tranquil and yet mystifying way.

Enjoy your visit to this unique place - Assisi - and be enchanted by all you will see and experience in this land which remains very much the same, as it was 801 years ago.. when it was filled with the edifying presence of St Francis and St Claire - both residents of Assisi.

Assisi is a lovely place of deep peace, tranquillity and she enjoys the rich splendour of creation in a very special way - we can only be there, to experience it - such an experience is beyond words....

Enjoy every moment of your visit/stay in Assisi.

The Basilica of Santa Chiara is well worth a visit. The church itself on the Corso Mazzini was built over an earlier structure in the Italian Gothic style. Its buttresses extend out into the piazza to the side of the church. Inside, an aura of hushed silence, with the nuns periodically producing loud SHhhhh sounds to keep the silence. In one chapel is the crucifix of San Damiano which according to tradition bowed its head and told St. Francis to "repair God's church". In the crypt below, St. Clare is buried. She's behind glass and the faithful can file past in a single line. The setting is sublime...and the aura of peace is unmistakable.

Nearby is a small museum with artifacts and clothing belonging to St. Francis and St. Clare. This is a place not to be missed. The nuns close the church to visitors when it rains, so if the sky is overcast, make this your first stop.

Behind an unremarkable exterior, the inside of this basilica is surprisingly beautiful - austere, with a few fading beautiful frescoes and the famous "talking" crucifix, an Orthodox-like piece of art worth the visit in itself, and the tomb of Saint Claire in the crypt.
