This is a beautiful small church away from the main Assisi. It's beautiful and it's peaceful as it's at making the hills and gardens. It's well explained and guided by the numbers in the church. Just follow it and it's a great experience. Must go!

This is where the cross spoke to St Francis and asked him to build the church (it is a copy of the original cross where the original is now in Santa Chiarra church). Look for the hole in the ceiling used by St Clare to listen to Mass when she was bedridden and unable to come downstairs to the chapel.

If I had one place to visit in Assisi it would be here in the heart of St.Ciara.Her presence is tangible and the energy is so powerful... It just holds you and touches your heart.

If your visiting Assisi (if only for a day) you must visit this charming little Church. It sets the scene for the rest of your visit to Assisi and marks an important event in the life of St Francis

It is quite a walk to San Damiano, but it is 100% worth the effort. The place is located in an olive grove, with a fantastic view and everything is quite self-explanatory and easy to make your way around the church. There is so much character to the place that is decidedly difficult to describe. Definitely one of my favourite... More

As a devotee of St. Francis, seeing the cross of San Diamiano (even if it's a replica) in its original location is worth the visit. We saw the original cross at the Basilica of St. Clare which we also visited. Like most of the churches we visited in Italy, San Damiano has a very medieval atmosphere in terms of spirituality.... Although an atheist, I was really moved by what I saw, which was a convincing account of the saints who lived and prayed there centuries ago. Well worth the short walk out of town.

This place has an historical importance in the lives of Assisi saints (most notably Claire, Francis and Agnes). This is where the original St Damiano Cross that's presently at the St Claire's Basilica, was hanging and hence the story of Francis' "conversion" commences. Also, this is where St Claire died (1253) and where St Francis came to pray & meditate.
