Please understand, this is a Holy place. A meditative St. Francis spent years here in prayer and penance. It is not just a tranquil walk or a neat trail, it is a space for personal reflection in the presence of God's creation.

This place brought tears to my husband and I . It was so emotional to see the place where Saint Francis was incarcerated . This spiritual and peaceful experience definitely can change some people's values.

The ambiance was delightful and we enjoyed the old pictures of life in Assisi on the walls however the waitress we had was indifferent. Quick and not interested in our questions. Won't be back.

Too far to walk up or down, especially in heat, except for the very fittest, this is nevertheless a lovely place to visit. The panoramas are magnificent, and the walks through the mountain forest preserve is like something out of the Halls of the Mountain Kingdom. It's a world heritage site I had wanted to visit all my life. But... More

Be warned this is quite a long way from the city and the city maps underestimate the distance..A stiff climb over a few kilometres. But I did it and I am 70. Very moving site. No refreshments availabe at the hermitages and picnics forbidden.

Being on retreat, I decided to make a pilgrim meditative walk up the 4.5km route to the Hermitage of St Francis, Eremo delle Carceri. The route was easy but the climb can be steep at some points. As there was no time pressure, there were points where I could stop for some breaths of fresh air, enjoy and marvel at... More

Just a short ride or a nice hike from the center of Assisi the Carceri takes you back in time and place to the time of Francis. It is a must see if you are visiting Assisi.

You feel the presence of Saint Francis and the tranquility of the place as soon as you pass the concession stand (inevitable) at the entrance. The chapel, the woods, the simple altars and benches in the woods evoke the spirit of the time.

To go to Eremo delle Carceri is to be transported to another place. When I went there is was so quiet and all you could here was the wind in the trees and the birds singing. An amazing place and I am sure when you go there you take that peace with you. I recommend other to visit this site.... More
