If you love Giotto's painting, then this Basilica is a must see. There are also many works by other notable artists within the church.

This cathedral is lovely from the outside. But it feels more like a museum inside than a place of reverence. If you want to experience the peace of St. Francis I recommend the church in the valley, Mary of the angels.

The basilica is very old and very beautiful. There is a genuine feeling of holiness as you sit in prayer. The artwork is beautiful and the scenery surrounding is breathtaking.

The basilica is actually two separate churches, a lower and an upper. I liked the detail of the exterior of the rose windows. We would first go into the lower church. There were signs stating that photos were not allowed. I was in good company...More

Our 3 rd visit and still an amazing place to go. Peaceful and spiritual. The lower basilica and San Francesco tomb are wonderful. A must see place but more over a must experience it place. Take time to stop and just soak in the atmosphere.

We did a 17 day tour of Italy. One of the best surprises was our relative short (1/2 day) visit to the 13th century Basilica of St. Francis, which is 2 large churches built on top of each other. Very unique when you see the...More

We first attended English mass before we toured the Basilica. It is a beautiful honor to both our Savior and St Francis.

A huge and beautiful basilica. There are several layers to the church to see including a museum. There is no entry fee like all Catholic churches in Italy. You could easily spend over an hour visiting everything. There are also beautiful views as it is...More

The Basilica is on 3 levels - upper basilica, lower basilica and crypt. In 1228 St Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory 1X in Assisi. The remains of St Francis are in the crypt . The Earthquake of 1997 caused a lot of damage that...More
