A wide square with a wonderful view on the valley. On the other side there is the green mountain. But the best is the "Palazzo dei Consoli". The building was a example of medieval architectural with a lot of stairs and some secret passages, The Museum exhibition has a lot of paintings from 15° and 16° century. Furthermore there are seven rare tables (Tavole eugubine) written in part with an old language more ancient than latin and part with "Etruscan language" engraved one century b.C.

It is a spectacular building, well worth a visit.

However, it is not friendly for older individuals who have some mobility issues. No railing up the steps to the museum and a long stairwell to the art collection

There is an elevator what takes you up from the city to plaza and also up to the church. We walked up and are in our 70s and managed just fine. But it is steep!

Gubbio is a must see overall and probably the best city we have visited in Italy with directions to all the sites, with walking times.

Parking was very easy.

This museum is situated in what used to be city-hall. The building itself, in the main old town square, is superb. The museum has a very nice collection - not too daunting, with some good 13-15 cent. art, a surprisingly fine ceramic collection - and... a porch to die for - with views of the whole town and valley. A must stop in this splendid town

The Romanesque and Gothic styled Palazzio dei Consoli was constructed mostly in the 14th century and is one of the finest medieval civic buildings in Italy. Its imposing bulk dominates the wind-swept Piazza della Signoria, along with the similar-styled Palazzo Pretorio (town hall) on the opposite side of the piazza. Today it houses the Civic Museum with collections of paintings from the Gubbian School and local archaeological finds. The entrance fee is quite modest. On the first floor is located the cavernous and virtually unadorned Salone dell'Arengo where local council meetings and debates were held. The English word "harangue" is derived from Arengo, so the council meetings must have often been contentious. While the local artwork and medieval furniture displays are interesting, the main reason to visit the interior are the Eugubine Tablets, the only extant record of the ancient Umbrian/Etruscan language. Because the text is also recorded in Latin, the tablets are equivalent to the Rosetta Stone. Views over the old city of Gubbio from the upper floors are splendid and worth the price of admission.

It's not hugely expensive to get in, you get some wonderful views from the balcony. There are some lovely pieces of artwork and ceramics and the beautiful Iguvine Tablets

An amazing museum. Houses Umbrian writings on copper tablets dating back 2000 years, describing agricultural rituals. Also pottery and methods describing the composition of the dyes used for decorating it, a variety of frescos and artifacts. Warning: be prepared to CLIMB STAIRS. Lots of stairs. At the top you will have an amazing view of the Piazza Grande and surroundings.

We visited the Palazzo dei Consoli to see the Gubbio in the time of Giotto exhibition. The exhibition was very interesting and we also enjoyed the permanent collection. There is also a wonderful view of the city and surrounding countryside from the upper floor.

I am teaching in a study abroad program in Florence and brought a group of my students to Gubbio. Our first stop was here and we were all completely disappointed. The problem was the tour and the tour guide. Both were awful. Since we had time constraints, we really missed out on seeing a lot in the Museo Civico. We tried to separate ourselves from the tour guide (basically, fire the person), but the guide would not leave us!!! Very odd!!

If we had just paid the admission fee and gone in on our own, the experience would have been far better. The palazzo is beautiful with marvelous photo opportunities of the Umbrian countryside and the Museo Civico is interesting - small and lots of history about Gubbio and the surrounding area. Just SKIP paying for a tour and enjoy the Museo Civico on your own and at your own pace.

Gubbio is a beautiful small hill-town without the crowds of tour groups that are filling many other of the Northern Italian destinations. The Museum has limited opening hours like many in Italy so check and prepare ahead. The Etruscan tablets are the big draw but there is far more. The fountains show how little progress we have made.
