This factory is very hard to find since there are almost no signs on highway. It is NOT in Perugia. It is the small village of San Sisto, about 5 miles away from outer Perugia. San Sisto is basically 1 main street. The factory is all the way at the end in an industrial zone on your right side just before you get to a giant square shape roundabout. Don't miss it. It says NESTLE on the outside and nothing else. If you drive by, it is hard to come back. Also, be aware of their lunch break. They won't even let you in if it gets too close to lunch time. It is well worth going. The factory tour is interesting and there is free chocolate at the START of the tour. Don't wait until the end. Take some at the start. They are delicious. The tour is free.

We had planned to join the tour when we visited Perugia but unfortunately the English tours were booked for the weekend we were in town. If you are thinking of touring make your reservation in advance. Without a tour you are able to check out the store and still sample some of the chocolate.

This commercial promo tour of the Nestle owned Baci chocolate factory was actually quite good, in that you had quite a few samples and tastes, and if you go from August till April the factory will be running, other times it may not be as people eat less chocolate in summer apparently. I think for children this is a 5 star place, adults who may well have seen such things in the past it's 3 stars

I enjoyed the tour. I have done other chocolate tours and thought this was the best at explaining the chocolate making process. I loved the 'eat as much as you want' chocolate tasting. (A cup of coffee would have made it even better!) This is an adult information tour and is not geared to children.
I agree with another reviewer that the tour guide could have done with having a mic. Twice we had large parties of children going past us and it was impossible for the tour guide to talk over the noise they made. The factory wasn't in operation but I still enjoyed the walk above the production line. Overall a fun and different way of spending an hour or so.
A couple of points on logistics. You have to ring ahead to book on the tour and the website could be clearer with info on this and even better it could provide a way of booking online.
We went by bus Linea A from the Bus station. On the timetable it seems that the bus does not come back via the bus station. This is strictly true but the bus does stop at the roundabout which is next to the bus station. Perugina is big and you won't miss the stop in San Sisto for it. Finding the bus stop for the way back is slightly tricky as the road outside Perugina is one way. Cross the road, turn left and walk until you see a road coming in on your right. The bus stop is just down there on the other side of the road.

While visiting Umbria during early June our group did a tour of the Perugina museum, factory and chocolate class.
When we first got to the museum we got to watch a short video explaining the history of the factory before being taken through the museum. It was definitely interesting to hear how the famous chocolate came to be and seeing some of the earlier packaging designs. I think this took about 30 mins, but the length had to do with the guides explaining the history in Italian and English.
Before heading into the factory you get to feast on a lot of chocolate. And when I say a lot, I mean A LOT. And it was so good! The walk through the factory was anticlimactic in after eating all that chocolate. Having been there in June when the factory was not in production, there wasn't much to see. But you get a chance to eat more chocolate when you are done.
The real highlight was the chocolate class. In the class you learn the basics of making chocolates and the keys for having a good filling. You get to choose the ingredients for your chocolates, put it all together, decorate them and bring them with you. Making the chocolates was a blast, but it was really messy, so make sure you don't wear light colors or anything you're afraid of getting dirty.
Unfortunately the shop wasn't open, so we didn't get to buy any chocolates for gifts, but the chocolates made in the class make a great gift if you've had enough chocolate for the week.
I found the overall experience enjoyable and would definitely recommend it to anyone traveling in the area.

This was a great way to learn some of the history of chocolate production in Perugia. Our guide's English was very good, and she was obviously very knowledgeable. The factory tour was less interesting than the museum because there was only one manufacturing line running due to the time of year, but we still enjoyed learning about the company and of course tasting all the chocolate!

I had done a lot of research ahead of time and booked an English-speaking tour for us. The outside signage was confusing so we ended up driving around the building several times before finding the parking lot.
The factory tour was lengthy with lots of descriptions, walking through the factory but the best part was the small tasting room which had samples of all their chocolates of which many flavors aren’t available in Canada or the US. My husband was embarrassed to try very many but I had read previous reviews and knew we could help ourselves. After the tour we were led to the gift shop which had pretty high prices for North Americans but which are standard in Europe.
I was so happy with the factory tour that I booked the chocolate-making tour for the next day. There was a large room with individual stations with hot plates for melting the chocolate. We were able to make liquor-infused chocolate and a free-standing chocolate. After the liquor-infused ganache bag filled the individual chocolate trays we were told to throw the rest of the bag into the garbage. Not wanting to waste good chocolate, I was naughty enough to pipe the rest into my mouth. I came back to our hotel with a chocolate-making certificate, recipe in Italian and many nicely packaged chocolates that I made myself. It was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

We called the number in the morning and just about managed to book even though the operator spoke only a little English. She was friendly though and we got there in the end.
We arrived early and had the English tour at 3.30pm (the last of the day). An Italian tour started just before us with about 6 people, so things looked promising.
Sadly for us more and more people turned up until we had somewhere between 50 and 60 people. The guide showed us to a room where we spent 10 minutes watching a rather basic video about the history or Perugina. With lots of shots of factory equipment the kids, of which there were about 20 in the party, were starting to yawn. Then it was to upstairs to the ’museum’ area. This was a room filled with various displays and artifacts and information, all of which were annotated in Italian only. This type of museum is really only for those who really ‘want to know’ the information and are willing to listen to the guide shout at you in rapid fire with a strong Italian accent. This went on for about another 20minutes. Having visited both the Cadbury’s factories in Bourneville and Dunedin I was interested to learn...but it was hard work. With a crowd of 50+ only about a dozen people at the front could really see and hear the guide anyway, and by this time most of the kids were gazing at the floor. Other parties walked by in the background only making it more difficult to hear - even with our guide barking at them to ‘be quiet or no chocolate for you’.
Then finally to the tasting room where they had laid out about 10 trays of chocolates for us to try. Note you aren’t allowed to pocket any chocolates and are supposed to eat them there and then. The guide tried to get people to form an orderly line but it all ended up as a bit of a shambolic free for all. Everyone got a taste but you also felt a bit like Augustus Gloop having to gorge yourself on so much, rather than having discreet tasting points to try things as you go around. This had at least perked the kids up somewhat and then, fuelled by a sugar rush, we all were hustled down a long corridor to the beginning of the factory tour.
This basically consists of a 200m gantry walk above the factory looking down through glass windows as the production lines below. This could have potentially been the most interesting part, but with no descriptions as to what you were actually seeing, you are just a somewhat passive passer by looking at various pieces of equipment without any knowledge as to what they do.
Then it was a very brief thank you and goodbye and we were ushered to the shop. Here you are met with all the various chocolate varieties, some rather cheap (or not so cheap as it turned out) cuddly toys, t-shirts and fridge magnets. For such a major brand you would think they could push the boat out for better quality merchandise perhaps. Price points start from about 1euro for a chocolate smarties egg to 10-15 for a cuddly toy...or select your own chocolates and put them in a tin for just 36 euro a kilo(ouch).
For over 30euros for our family , 10e for adults and 4e for each child, I definitely wouldn’t recommend this as anything other than a last resort rainy day activity. The annoying thing is that it could be so good, but they are missing so many opportunities to convert people into ambassadors for their brand. You would be better to spend your money just taking the kids to a quality sweet shop and spending 30euros there. They’d learn just as much and get to take their time enjoying the chocolates.

Great day out , lovely tour and our guide Roberta was excellent, she really has a passion for what she does and she speaks fluent English , the tasting room is great ( picture attached )I suggest to invest in some great chocolate in the gift shop, also note that some parts of the factory may not be active during late spring or beginning of summer ( as this is a time when production slow down ), you may want to check, how ever is still a great tour .. thank you and Baci!

We called on the day we wanted to send guests on a tour and we were not told that the factory wasn't operational. So a group of 5 adults and 3 children had a look at a museum with NO chocolate tasting. But they were happy to show them the chocolate shop to make purchases.
So disappointing when all previous reviews had been so amazing.
Take pot luck with seeing the machines in operation (even if the company covers themselves in their confirmation email) - the staff don't even know the SAME DAY that the machines won't be working.
Crazy.

Il costo del biglietto per adulti e 9 euro compresa la degustazione di tanti tipi di cioccolato e in più ti danno tre tavolette di kit kat. Per poter accedere e obbligatorio prenotare altrimenti non ti fanno entrare. Tutto passa dalle prenotazioni online.

I'm sorry, accidentally posted before I finished! What I was going to say was, you can catch the a bus from Piazza Italia, it arrives directly out the front of the chocolate factory. Buy a ticket (€2) on the bus or go to a tabacchi (like a newsagent, clearly marked with a T) pay a bit less for ticket there.

Hi Kelly, important, THEY ARE NOT IN PRODUCTION IN SUMMER. I went in june, and they give tours, but it was very dissappointing, no chocolates being made at all. They even take all their chocolates out of the stores after Easter. Italians do not eat chocolate in summer. Go to their website if u still want to book a tour, but all you see is empty conveyor belts and empty vats. The group i was with said they will never go back in summer. You get a handful of chocolates and learn their history. I would recommend spending time in perugia - the underground city, the cafes with real naples margharita puzza, the museums and churches.
