The guide book warns you that every inch of this church is covered in paint, gilt or marble and it was not wrong! This is truly a stunning place. There is an entrance fee but you receive an iPad which is loaded with all the...More

It was the last Basilica I visited in Perugia. So beautiful and full of famous paintings inside in the Basilica and in the corner room the Sacristy. You will find several Caravaggio paintings and one Raphael’s painting “Jesus and John the Baptist”. It is in...More

San Pietro is a fascinating church historically and artistically, but there is so much more here. It forms part of the complex, based around various courtyards, of a part of the University, so has a lively student buzz. It also has lovely gardens, including a...More

The Cathedral of San Pietro is a beacon on the skyline of Umbria. You can see the bell tower from miles away. It is outside the city

By "coherent" is meant decor that is coordinated and not the rococo mish-mash that so many churches exhibit. The garden is more than a kitchen garden, but a retreat from the hubbub of the city. Well worth the walk from city center.

Every part of the interior is highly decorated, and many of the features deserve close study. There is amazing carving in the choir stalls, with dividing arm rests carrying mythical beasts. There are significant paintings everywhere, it just needs time to take it all in.
