Since providing a water supply is essential to any city, especially to an ancient one on top of a high mountain, a fountain was a very Big Deal in the middle ages. Fountains therefore were often grand constructions, and often decorated with figures of the patron saints of the city, personifications of virtues such as Fortitude and Patience, images of... More

I was shocked to read some of the reviews calling this fountain "plain" and "disappointing" and "seriously overrated". How can any work of medieval art so complicated and representative of a mighty city,as Perugia was at that time,be belittled in this manner I asked myself? Calming down and trying to relate to tired tourists coming through on a day trip... More

This fountain sits in the middle of the piazza and, while a little plain, is quite interesting. However, I think it is overshadowed by the cathedral and other magnificent buildings that surround the piazza. But, if you find yourself in the piazza, take the time to have a look. It has a good story.

One of the other must see at the Piazza IV Novembre, which is the central point of Perugia's Centro. This magnificent sculpture is currently being restored and has a duplicate sculpture of the 3 women at the centre of the fountain in the adjoining museum. Once the restoration finished and the fountain functioning it should be a truly magnificent site... More

This fountain (one of the finest & still in existence) is located in the Piazza Grande in Perugia, between the cathedral and Palazzo dei Priori. It was a historic focal point for the people of Perugia, and demonstrates its historical & cultural roots (being Etruscan). Built between 1277 & 1278, it was seen as the symbol of a free city.... The Fontana Maggiore is a huge medieval fountain in front of the cathedral. It has faces and animals carved into the stone, and was originally fed by a medieval aqueduct. Now it's a great piece of work to admire in the wonderful centre of Perugia old town.

To me this was the heart of Perugia! From Tourists, to locals to pets, Kids, Old and Wise you will find everyone on this plaza. There are some great cafe and pasticeria around. You can feel the vibe of the town! Just sit with a cup of coffee or sit on the steps and people watch for hours! Its not... More

ok, it's another fountain, but you have to appreciate the artistic value. In the middle of the city centre, so why not stop for a picture. It's worth a stop.

According to the travel guides this fountain is one of the highlights of Perugia. It is a beautiful fountain, but my expectations were probably a bit too high. Unfortunately the fountain is surrounded by a fence and therefore the sight is limited.

In the heart of the old city center, a crossroad for visitors and an impressive focal point of interest.
