About
With over 3,300 objects to its name, Basel Historical Museum is in possession of Switzerland’s largest collection of musical instruments. Spread over three floors, the Musikmuseum boasts some 650 European instruments spanning five centuries of music history from the oldest drum dating from 1571 and a highly ornate viola da gamba by Joachim Tielke (ca. 1704) to the Weber Unika Orchestrion of 1925. The twenty-four cells of the former prison serve as showcases in which visitors can admire the instruments while calling up countless samples and additional information on an interactive screen. While touring the museum you will therefore hear all sorts of music, from the familiar to the bizarre.

Excellent - found by accident
Dec 2019
We found this by accident - it is absolutely outstanding, huge range of musical instruments all with accompanying podiums allowing you to hear the music as well as teaching you about the instruments

Very Nice Museum
Sep 2019
We had a day to kill and stopped in to this museum. It is in a historic building with thousands of old, historic, unique and interesting artifacts. Very well done and good value for the money.

If you are a musician visiting Basel, stop in at Musikmuseum
Jun 2018
June 2017 - Basel has many museums, but one dedicated to music, displaying approximately 650 instruments was a real draw for us. Many unique horns and stringed instruments along with everything else. Three floors - I don't know if there was an elevator, so if that is required, please investigate prior to visiting.

Fascinating collection of old instruments
Jan 2019 • Solo
I went here with my son who is a musician. The museum has a wonderful collection of all kinds of old musical instruments, some of which are also beautiful and some of which are just bizarre. In some rooms one can play an audio to hear what some of the instruments sound like. Not a must see but for someone interested in music or who just likes things out of the ordinary, this place is worth an hour of your time.

The one museum to see in Basel
Sep 2018 • Couples
If you have only have time to visit one museum in Basel this the one to see. We went to what they called happy hour. It is the last hour that the museum is open, 4-5. I museum is well laid out with many interesting artifacts. Sine we only had a hour we had to rush through, we could have spent two or more hours reading the history of the items.

Stunning!
Jul 2018 • Friends
We only had an hour here but could have spent many more ( i am biased as i am a music teacher). Absolutely loved the many strange instruments set out over the 4 floors. Many hybrid sax cross trumpets and other strange things along with a good collection of historic instruments.Cost about 7 euro..well worth it!

Amusing
Jun 2018 • Family
This is a prison turned into a music museum. The entire idea is rather appealing and intriguing.how wonderfully prison cells have been converted into interactive music cells, each cell showcasing different instruments.

Well displayed

Musical instruments arranged in groups in cells (was a prison). The interactive displays in each cell not easy to use at first. Nice to be able to hear the sound of different instruments.

A 'V7-I' Experience
Jul 2017 • Solo
I wrote the same quirky review in their visitor's book! But seriously, although an intimate space (& mind your head if you're tall!), the Museum of Music has a wonderful collection of period keyboards in excellent condition which can be closely inspected without velvet ropes and beeping alarms being triggered when you lean in!
Their woodwind, brass & percussion instruments are secured behind glass and are thus difficult to photograph, and the lighting is a little dim in some display cases.
Children will love interacting with the various organ pipe & keyboard hammer & string-plucking mechanisms.
