Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The first impression, seen from the outside: impressive, special! After entering, slowly, slowly...disappointment.
Very large building, few exhibits. An exhibition dedicated to Asian culture and one to African culture. And that's it.
No explanations in English.
In maximum one hour you have seen everything.

An eclectic collection of glimpses of diverse, unconnected cultures, comprising exhibits from snippets of different movies of the Heidi story, through the culture of opium, to randomly "salvaged" artefacts collected by Basel anthropologists' visits to Borneo, Indonesia and Cameroon. I found the exhibits disconnected and poorly curated. Among the poorest of my museum visits.

It is a pitty to see such nice artifacts without understanding what they mean. Visitors would enjoy much more if it displays information in English as well.

the museum is in a ideal spot in basel, easy reachable from marktplatz. its full of wonderful objects
from other cultures. such a lot we can learn. we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. and its quite spaciously laid out so you have plenty of time to see things. by the reception is a lovely gift shop laid out with interesting articles to buy. plus its a beautiful building in a beautiful place.

Nice design building and pleasant environment. The museum holds a diverse and wide range of collections, from Western to Asian arts, ancient paintings to fashion architectural designs. No harm to visit but I found it quite difficult to understand the theme of the Museum and the connection of collections. Just a very short visit.

This museum is worth going to see, if only for its beautiful new building located not far from the cathedral. When we went, the Kulturen contained a number of interesting ethnographic oriented exhibits and some of those in which we weren’t very interested (such as the exhibit on Opium). But no matter what our opinion was, each exhibit seemed to be carefully curated.
We should also note that at this point in time, this museum is in part standing in for Basel's Kunstmuseum, which is the principal Basel museum that is closed so that its new expansion can be built. Not sure when that gets completed, but in light of this, the museum was hosting a small exhibit on Holbein, Cranach, and Grunewald that featured classical artists from the Northern Renaissance, clearly atypical for this institution.

It looked like some of the things there could have been quite interesting. However there was no English and the English explanation sheets didn't explain anything or help at all. It was very quiet when I was there and the spaces seemed really big and empty. The objects were nice to look at but that's all I could do so I didn't end up staying that long. Unless you're a German speaker it may not be worth the entrance price.

The museum is a hodgepodge of artifacts from around the world and lacks an overview. In a city of wonderful museums, one wonders - why this?

Having recently returned from Cental America we were looking forward to seeing the carved wooden lintels from Tikal. Sadly only one of the four owned by the museum was on display, a beautiful and amazing survival of Mayan civilisation.
Apparently this museum has Switzerland's largest ethnological and folk art collection, in which case either a very small proportion is on display or there is almost nothing in the rest of the country! The museum seems more concerned with preserving its light airy spaces than exhibiting more artifacts.
Two temporary exhibitions: suspended stones, a second of around thirty examples of very similar pleated skirts, took up almost two floors and a third floor was closed. That left one floor of exhibits. The replica of an initiation house from Papua, New Guinea was interesting.
Museum guides were very helpful.
Yes, the building is interesting, but that's not the point.
For what is on display very expensive at 16CHF pp - but I suppose this is Switzerland!

I have been to this museum many times now, as we visit our daughter in Basel, it is one of the most interesting museums I have visited, they have the most divest exhibits ranging from walls of used water bottles, odd things from around the world made of old used tins, a fantastic exhibition of puppets from the Far East , the display of arrows has yet to be bettered, they have 2 floors of permanent exhibits and 2 others that they change.
