Symbol of Bern
Aug 2020
The Bärenpark has moved for a few years to a huge park located on the end of the Old Town. Definitely a visit worth it.

Bern's Bears
Sep 2020
The park is located on the river and is home to two brown bears, which are a symbol of Bern. I think in the morning can be seen by visitors, we were in the park in the afternoon and the bears were missing.

Should be better in the summer
Dec 2019
I visited the Barenpark in December 2019. I guess I forgot the basic rule that bears hibernate in the winter. It was raining a lot and there were no bears. I managed to read the outdoor exhibit and information about the bears. I suppose this place is a lot better in the summer and during warmer weather. I was able to get a few photos but it was difficult with the rain. Later during our stay when the rain stopped and it was sunny, our friends managed to see one bear.

Bärengraben: One bear wasn't hibernating
Dec 2019
If you google map BärenPark and Bärengraben, the BärenPark is placed at the zoo. I visited the BärenPark next to the tourist information and the Bärengraben (the bear pit) which cannot be found specifically on TripAdvisor, but which seems to be the place where other reviewers visited.

Free to enter and not enclosed. Easy to reach from the rose garden (5-min walk), and a 15-min. walk from Old City. We were just walking from the rose garden and didn't expect to see the bears in the winter, but one bear was out on the hillside. There wasn't a lot to see, and the bear was almost too far away to take photos, but he stayed outside digging and foraging for us to watch. I will post what I saw. It is wheelchair accessible with a free elevator down to the river. Dogs are not allowed even though it is an open walkway beside the river.

This enclosure is very humane with the original bear pit and the new hillside linked by a tunnel, allowing the bears to make use of both spaces. The smaller pit is no longer used by the bears, but used instead to give access to the Bärengraben's shop and to provide a performance space, although everything is pretty empty in the winter.

You can look down the steeply sloping land between the Bärengraben and the bank of the River Aar to see the bears or walk down the stairs to the river and look up at the bears. It is a lot of walking down to the river. It was amazing to see the creature in person, oblivious of us all, happy in his habitat.

The Bärengraben is a Swiss heritage site of national significance, and is of particular significance in Bern because the bear is a symbol of both the city and surrounding canton, and is featured in their coat of arms.

Bears
Dec 2019
I visit it during winter, I was told the Bears were hibernating, so it wasn't available to see them, but the location is great to walk up a little bit and get a view of the old city with the river and the bridge.

Wonderful improvement
Oct 2019
After not visiting the bear pit for over 20 years, it is wonderful to see that the bears now has a 6000 square meter park to roam around with the wonderful location by the Aare. The bears can still choose to be in the bear pit as the two areas are connected by a tunnel.

Nice but...
Nov 2019 • Couples
Yesterday we visited Bern and after passing through the old town we reached the bear park, where we did not see bears since they hibernated for the autumn and winter.
The park itself is sufficiently large, has pits and pools, but as others mentioned bears should be free and not caged... I know it is traditions, but still.

A usual park with bears
Oct 2019
This is a usual park next to a river. The only exception is there are bears in which I could see two. They are lonely and I can't understand why people keep the bears in such an environment. They better live in nature.

Bears in the bear pits again?
Oct 2019 • Couples
We were surprised, and a little dismayed, to see bears back in the bear pits again. They have such a lovely, proper outdoor area to be in, why do they need to be in the ‘medieval’ bear pits??

We did ask, and were told, that they were only there for 1/2 an hour...

I’m sure there was/is a valid reason; but the pits do give the impression of a wild animal trapped in an artificial environment for our amusement (which, of course, they are anyway - but you know what I mean).
