- MerryheartSingapore, Singapore7,689 contributionsBeautiful view of LuzernTo me, the Musegg Wall and its 9 towers are a must visit landmark, alongside the Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument. This wall was a historical fortification of Luzern in the 13th century. There were two rings of ramparts when it was first built and then more towered were added. The wall itself is 800m. Some towers were not accessible, we went to the Zyt Tower which is the clock tower, there were a series of steep steps to climb to get to top to enjoy the Beauvoir of Luzern. It is recommended to come here during good weather to truly capture the beauty of the view.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 May 2024
- Kamal PByron Bay, Australia9,070 contributionsA wall that protected the city and well preserved to dateIt is fascinating to see the long and meandering wall standing tall with 9 towers serving to protect the city in by gone era. We were able to see parts of the wall from different locations getting closer to many. We felt that to explore this important part of the ancient city will take a fair amount of our available time as it would mean visiting each of the 9 towers and exploring the interiors where public was allowed to enter and picking up the history behind them. Nevertheless, what we saw gave us lot of insight to appreciate and enjoy the phenomenal structure and imagine the city in a smaller scale with its fortifications around year 1400.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 May 2024
- Flannery52Chapel Hill, North Carolina766 contributionsBeautiful Views. Easy Walk. There are two entrances to walking these old city walls. One entails a relatively long uphill walk, and we'd already walked a lot that day, so we turned around. The next day, we approached the walls from the Lion Monument. We still had some uphill walking, but it was a more enjoyable meander through the town. Whichever way you go, I highly recommend this walk. Be sure to climb each tower; the views are worth it. We had a picnic lunch with us and enjoyed it below the wall in the grass on a bench (we went down one tower, ate, went back up the same tower).Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2024

We would have loved to have taken a picnic to enjoy on the lawn with the gorgeous view! Many towers to climb but we chose to climb the clock tower. Take your time and you’ll make it to the top! Incredible views.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 September 2024

As part of a suggested walking route around the old city of Lucerne, the Museggmauer was a nice place to visit to get some views of the city and the lake from a height. That said, it is a hike, mostly uphill, to get there and not for those who have mobility issues. As I went on a Sunday, unsure if there is more historical information or tours available during the week. Climbing the larger tower is a lot of steps and then treetops block much of the view. Surprising.
Can be a nice place to visit for the views but YMMV.

I would not have missed much if I had skipped it. It is a steep climb or a lot of steps to just look at a wall. From the top, it is a little confusing coming down as we ended in a different part of town then where we started from. This could be disorienting in a new city.

Museggmauer is the old medieval town fortification wall which protected the town of Lucern from the northern side.
Along it are nine watch towers starting with Nolliturm which is down by the Reuss river.
Walk along the walls path offers great views.

The Museggmauer is a well maintained piece of history. The wall is only open certain parts of the year so check before going.
When it's open you can walk the wall and take in great views and see one of the many displays inside. On the outside there is a well maintained path that you can walk the length of.

Well preserved town walls and fortification towers of Lucerne. Steep walk from the town and some narrow stairs inside so watch your step. Worth a visit for the great views st the top. Free to enter. Not good for prams or young kids at all. We saw one young kid fall while we were waiting to go up. Might be tricky in the summer when really busy as only one way so there is a lot of waiting for others to come up or down.

Beautiful view from above over the city of Lucerne. Free activity. Bring sporty clothing and be in good physical condition: many very steep stairs. Narrow stairs. Not very long activity. Allow 10-15 minutes of climbing.

A great walking experience, offering great views on the town and the landscape. Some of the towers include curiosities like medieval clocks.
Also, during summer the place is available till rather late (e.g. 19:30) so you can visit it in the late afternoon even if you do not want to block your afternoon agenda.

Is there a tower that is easier to climb than others. Can I take a lift up the hill to avoid the uphill walk. Where should I start?
Written 18 October 2022
Ellen, in my travels there I did not encounter any lifts. One side is a street I walked uphill on and the other side was a park I walked down through. Others may have more information but that was my experience.

Where are the steps to the Museggmauer when coming from the Lion Monument? From Museggstrasse, or Hertensteinstrasse?
Thank you, Cindy
Written 15 February 2020
Coming from the Lion monument, you should take the Mussegstrasse.
Then you will arrive at the first tower, which is Allenwindenturm. This one is not the most impressive, and usually you cannot visit it.
Therefore you must continue (on Mussegstrasse) until Schirmerturm. There you should be able to climb the tower and get on the defense wall. Then you just have to walk the wall and visit the other towers along the way.

Hi, I've read that the walls are closed on winter. But will I be able just to walk along the wall until reach the zeitturm? Whats specifically is closed?
Written 23 December 2018
Hi Larry,
I will be in Luzern next year and it sounds great to walk the wall and climb the towers.
Can you tell where you enter to walk between the four towers.
Cheers.

Opposite the cable car to the hilltop restaurant that looks like a castle (ask around - it's the one Michael Jackson tried to buy) there is a round tower right by the river.
The road goes through this tower and right beside it are steps going upward.
Climb them and follow the path to the next tower. Its easy - just look ahead and use common sense!
Take your camera!

hello , we would want to visit Museggmauer next week , and special the zeitturm ....but our knees are brocken . Where is the nearest parkplatz that avoid us to climb the hill ( and even worse : to go down the hill !) . I don't see any parking on "Streetview" near the Mauer even there is a gymnasium , so many practicing adherent ? thanks to all . Anne

May I know is the walk up to the top hilly or strenuous ? Does anyone with health problem have to avoid the climb? Tq
Written 27 December 2017
The heat made it a little difficult when we were there, but it was not strenuous. Lots of places to rest along the way. At some of the towers you have the option to go up the ladders/stairs and while the views and clockworks were fun to see if you are tired just skip.
