- mahatinu226 contributionsSee the falls from both sides, by visiting both stations that serve Rhine FallsFrom our base in Zurich, this was just a train ride away. There are two stops you can get off at, to see the southern side and the northern side. Both sides are worth a visit. At the southern side walk off the train and you see a queue of people waiting to buy tickets for the observation deck. These cost 5 CHF and can be paid for by card. Stunning scenery and the falls are magnificent. Boat trips (15 minutes and 30 minutes long) are available if you want to get up close to the falls. At the northern side there is no ticket cost, you just get off the train and walk towards the falls. Plenty of benches all round to sit and enjoy the spectacular scenery on offer.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- Imogen BitsuiOsaka, Japan3 contributionsBeautiful FallsA very beautiful waterfall that can be appreciated both from a distance and up close. You can make reservations in advance for a boat excursion, and then decide how long of a cruise you would want to take. They will take you quite near to the waterfall, and some of them will even go downstream a little bit, giving you the opportunity to see the cascade in its entirety. In addition, there is a restaurant where you can eat; however, you will need to make reservations in advance.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 November 2023

- Kamal PByron Bay, Australia9,512 contributionsIt is mighty and spectacularIt was amazing to watch the massive column of water cascading through the two gaps with a drop of the river Rhine. The fall was so impressive that we were gazing at it for several hours observing the rhythmic flow and skilful manoeuvring of sight-seeing boats against the sheer current that the fall was generating. It was a thrill to take the boat trip to the centre island and look at the upper river and the massive water body that squeezes its way down the drop, crashing into the base below creating thunderous ripples. It was a great thrill to sail in front so close to the fall and enjoy the wetting by the atomised water spray that evolved from the force of the drop. It was absolute fun and an experience that would never be repeated often.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 April 2024

- Sanka1 🇱🇰🇬🇧Bicester, United Kingdom6,172 contributionsEurope's largest waterfallWe visited Rhine Falls today and it was amazing. The attraction is dog friendly and takes you to platforms very close to the oncoming flow of water through a series of stairwells but is very safe. We went through the Schloss Laufen castle route which takes you closest to the falls. The tickets including cost CHF5 per person and can be bought at the entrance. You can park at the same premises and it costs CHF5 per hour to park. Brilliant and a unique experience having also been to Niagra falls and is a must visit.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 June 2024
- Krishna316Bengaluru, India245 contributionsPlan for a whole day picnicYou could spend a whole day here apart from just seeing the falls. There are playgrounds, castles and train rides. The falls itself were great, and the ferry took us quite near the falls, enough to get sprayed on by waterfall mist. We didn’t go to the viewing platform since we had young kids with us. This was the most crowded place we saw on our vacation, but it was a nice visit.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 July 2024
- Joe WMuscat, Oman87 contributionsBeautiful falls, lots of people.Beautiful falls. Nice facilities. I suggest not wasting money to pay for the viewing platform access near Schloss Laufen. Too full, no crowd control, nothing but camera phones and selfies. Just walk across the train bridge to the other side for a better view with less crowds. For free. Spend that 5 CHF on a beer or a boat ride.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 August 2024

We visited the spectacular Rhine Falls in the spring of 2019 (in the month of April to be precise). Rhine Falls was the first sight in our itinerary for Switzerland. Super excited, we reached Rhine Falls in the afternoon. We were standing on exactly the opposite side of the Rhine Falls, and the view was spectacular. What a majestic falls it is!
Also, I'd highly recommend the Rhine Falls Boat Ride (either the15-min or the 30-minute one) for a holistic experience. You'll never know how majestic and powerful Europe's largest waterfall is unless you get close to it. The experience is just awesome.
Hope you have an enthralling experience too!
Cheers :))

Rheinfalls is the largest plain waterfall in Europe.
You can do this trip on your own without arranging it with a guide. Take a train from Zurich HB main station towards Scaffhausen, get down at Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall station which is right at the waterfall on the south side of the river. It is a 50 minutes ride from Zurich main station. As soon as you come out of the platform, the walkway starts. Either walk down to one of the viewing platforms (purchase ticket on the way) or walk down to the riverbank. You can enjoy the gorgeous view of waterfall from there and a good point for clicking your pictures. You can buy tickets for boat rides from here. Tickets are not expensive. There are four boat rides of different duration. The yellow line tour will take you to the closest point which is the rock in the middle of the waterfall. Since we had to catch a train in the afternoon to Innsbruck, Austria we did not have much time. Hence we took the short tour, blue line which takes you close enough to the waterfall so that you can get a closeup view of the falls an few instances of water spray on to your face. You really get the feel of the power of water. It was a truly amazing experience. I recommend this visit to all those who are visiting Switzerland.

Well worth the time spent. They’re choices of 3 different boats, we chose the yellow one which took us to a rock right next to the waterfall. You get to climb up the rock which was a great experience. We ate at the nearby restaurant, the food was pricey but good; I’d recommended the cheaper options available. It’s an hours train ride from Zurich, however instead of getting just a ticket to the place, I’d recommend getting a travel pass, which can be tailored to the number of days you’ll be in Switzerland. Well worth the money

We spent a lovely day at the Rheinfall. I prefer to explain what tickets we booked etc. from Schaffhausen we took the train to Neuhausen/Rheifall. Be careful as there are 3 stations: Neuhausen and then Neuhausen Rheinfall and Neuhausen Schloss Laufen. We first took the train to the Rheinfall and went to the miniature museum named Smilestone, it is totally overpriced and not worth the money. Download the SBB app and you can purchase a day ticket for about 6CHF. Existing the train to the right you will find an elevator which goes down to the fall or you can exit left and walk along the waterfall down to the main spot where the boats are. We took the 15min boat for 8CHF and drove very close to the waterfall. The trip was long enough and a great experience, plus the ticket includes the cross over to the castle Schloss Laufen which usually costs 3CHF. We walked up and took the elevator to the castle where we just wandered around and had a sausage. Then we walked down to the cute train station back to Neuhausen as this train crosses the waterfall itself. Check the train schedule as we waited 30min for Theresia to come from Neuhausen to Schaffhausen and we were unable to find the bus stop which is a 6minute from the train station and not sign posted in which direction to go. Generally there were no signs to find the bus stops, so we preferred waiting at the train station.

We stopped off on part of our day tour with Leger coaches. Absolutely breathtaking views from all angles. Nice big carpark. Gift shop is worth a visit and quite reasonably priced too. The lake by the carpark is so crystal clear and you can see shoals of fish swimming so easily

It is easy to get here with a 50-minute train ride from Zurich Central Train Station. If you get off at the Neuhausen stop, you can directly reach the place where boat tours are held. There are 5/6 different tour options here. Although the prices vary depending on the minute and content, I would say between 3 Francs and 20 Francs. The color of the boots for each tour is different, which makes it easier to choose. The tour we preferred was the big river tour on green boats, which lasts 30 minutes for 10 Francs. In this tour, the boat goes 2-3 km ahead of the river, then comes to the nearest point of the waterfall and ends the tour. In addition, part of the other side of this river is German territory, and the captain of the boat gives information about the region in both German and English. After getting off the boat, you can walk and take photos in different parts of the waterfall. Even though there are different stops, I recommend those coming here to get off at the "Neuhausen" stop. I think the bus stop itself is a very well designed place. 2-3 hours will be enough for the Rhine Waterfalls.

This place is a "must see", especially if one is attracted to water, like myself. The promenade is splendid, with great opportunity for pictures. It can be romantic too. Two things impressed me the most: Overpriced potable water (€ 5 for 1/2 Lt plain water!), and, on the bright side, the professional skills of the skippers that offer the short boat trip to the falls. One has to be highly skilled to be able to control the boat in water full of eddies; kudos, guys!

Definitely worth going. Train is easy to get you there and drops you off where you can see it. I was told it was like the US version of Niagara Falls...but smaller. I think that is a very appropriate description. If you aren't afraid of stairs, I recommend buying the 20 franc tix for the yellow boat and climbing the rock in the middle. Your pictures will be beautiful!

Easy to get to by train from Zurich- we bought a daily public transport pass from a ticket machine at Zurich HBF which cost 26 francs and allowed unlimited public transport use from 9am to 5am the next day. The train took about 1 hour each way. We had excellent views of the waterfall and Schloss from the free North side observation areas (approached from Neuhausen Rhine Falls station which is different to Neuhausen station). We managed to fit Rhine falls in with plenty of other activities on the same day as the transport pass also covers lake cruises and the polybahn. Great day out.

If read the pluses and minuses of this your prior to booking it and decided to give it a try. It was a good tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and kind. I agree you can buy the boat tickets cheaper at the kiosk instead of on the bus but buying them on the bus allows you to skip the line and gives you s group boat allowing you all to be together saving you time to take pictures. You wont have the time for the longer boat ride that allows you to walk up the stairs nor do you have time for the castle. Please not there are a lot of stairs. Stein am Rheim is a beautiful fortified city which would be nice to have more time in. For a half day tour you get a good taste of both both activities.

Hello, I will be visiting Rhine Falls soon and wanted to know if it's possible to take a boat to cross from the southern end (without getting on observation decks) to northern end and if yes, then how?
I will be travelling with kids and old people and so would like to avoid hike/stairs for observation points and what I have noticed from Internet that boats can be available at southern end after walking through observation points, so I hope, it's not correct and one can take to northern end, without going on observation decks.
Thank you!

Is it accessible to handicapped people, wheelchair/scooter?
Written 16 August 2020
If you go by train, yes!
There is a railway station above the falls. There is also an elevator to bring you down to the level of the basin! There you have a good allround view!
If you want to go to the mini Rock-island (inside the falls) you cannot go with wheelchair!
But believe me...the view from the basin is anyway the best!

When doing the rock tour no. 1 yellow line, which side of the boat is best to sit on for views of the falls?
Written 18 April 2020
Hello,
The Yellow Line start as usual to east, goes below the Bridge, turns back, continue to the rhine falls. Then The boat reach the EAST half of the falls with the RIGHT SIDE of the Boat. Then the Boat turns in the basin and reach the WEST half of the falls with the LEFT SIDE of the boat. After that, the trip is over.

Hello
We are visiting Rhine Falls on Sunday 1 March, people say that everything is closed in Switzerland on Sunday, anyone know if the Rhine falls viewing platform and lift is still open or only in summer months ?
Also will the surrounding shops in the town be closed too ?
We just got that the falls won't freeze up, looks nice with water pouring down :)
Written 10 February 2020
I can't add much to the earlier answers. If you were visiting in warm weather I would strongly recommend the boat trip to the falls. I have viewed the falls from the platform, but on our return trip this past September we were treated to an up-close-and-personal experience of the real force of the water.
