A spectacular train ride, but there is a cheaper alternative

Last August, my wife and I took the glacier express using the SwissPass. If you ask me, is it worth enough to spend 7.5 hours in this train? Ok, this travel is absolutely worthwhile. We've started in St. Moritz going to Zermatt. We were lucky enough having a good weather, so, the picture behind the windows of the train was... More

We travelled from Brig to Chur on this very comfortable train. The journey took 4 hours and the views were outstanding so take plenty of batteries for your camera. Lunch is served on the train but we took our own food and drink as the food is served too early for us (12.00) and not cheap. Commentary given on train... More

While the glacier express takes you through the majestic swiss alps as slow as a train can go which allows for maximum picture taking time, there is a cheaper and in my eyes a better alternative. This comes at the catch of 20 minutes more of planning. Instead one can take the EXACT same train route without paying the seat... More

We travelled from Fiesch to Chur in second class. The trip itself is lovely, with good views (are there any bad views in Switzerland?) and an informative commentary available at your seat. But we had ordered the three-course meal and found it very disappointing. Bottled water also cost as much as beer. These are why I have given the rating... More

The great green pastures and melting glacier waterfalls the train runs by is absolutely stunning! Booking early: having the swiss pass made the trip much more affordable but made the mistake of booking a little too late. 2 months and 3 weeks before the travel date and 1st class was sold out. We had only aisle seats from 2nd available... More

We travelled on the Glacier Express as part of an inclusive holiday organised by Riviera Travel, from Brig to Chur. No-one can deny the engineering expertise that went into building the railway and, similarly, no-one can deny that there are marvellous views. But views of glaciers are easy to miss, even with the excellent commentary. You are supplied with a... More

Glacier express has two routes to choose from St. Mortiz to Zermatt and Zermatt to St. Mortiz We choose St. Mortiz to Zermatt and we boarded the train from Chur. The train was clean, staff was very good, food was amazing we ordered Indian Chicken Masala which was delicious. I believe 3 meal course is expensive (44 CHF) as if... More

After we boarded the train, our steward explained to us that we were going to make a detour to avoid the part of the track which had been wiped out in that avalanche the other day. This meant we were going to use the old part of the track, which I assumed was safe and hopefully free of avalanches. With... More

The trip was from Chur to just outside Zermatt. The lunch we were served (beef stroganoff) was very good. We were even offered seconds! The dessert was good as was the coffee. The scenery was AMAZING!!!! Simply Wow! No better way to see the Swiss countryside, farms, waterfalls, glaciers, and rivers.
