Stellisee

About
The Stellisee (2,537 m) is among the most famous of Zermatt’s lakes. The sight of the Matterhorn reflected on its mirror-like surface is breathtakingly beautiful, and is made for magnificent photographs. Pictures of the Stellisee can be seen all over the world: hardly surprising, because the reflection of the Matterhorn on its still surface has been photographed millions of times. The panoramic views of towering peaks, well over 4,000 m high, are among the most dramatic in the Zermatt region. The lake is a 20-minute walk from the Blauherd summit station. At sunrise and sunset, especially, this is a particularly romantic spot. Cotton grass grows along the lakeshore, providing splashes of white among the green-brown hues of the meadows. • Fly fishing (bookable offer) • Photo subject: reflection of the Matterhorn

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you are lucky with the weather (no clouds, only a very weak breeze) you can make the photograph of your life. But even without it is an easy beautifull walk.

This is where the most famous pictures of the Matterhorn reflection in a lake are taken. You should definitely go take your own. Go in the morning before it gets too crowded and because the lake is clear and flat. Later in the day breezes tend to make ripples in the water so the reflection is not as clear. Most people take the train up to Blauherd and then it's a short hike up to the lake. For those capable of longer hikes, I would recommend going all the way up to the Rothorn and hiking down to Stellisee, then past Blauherd and on to Sunnegga where you can sit in the sun while staring at the Matterhorn with good food and a local beer. It is also a nice hike down from Stellisee and Sunnegga into Zermatt.

About a 20 minute walk down and 25 minute walk back up. We managed to get our umbrella stroller down there, a bit harder to push back uphill with the loose gravel. A BOB stroller or stroller with rubber tired would have been better. The views were amazing and definitely worth the effort to make it to this lake.

People that work here are not helpful. First all the ticket places were closed (although ppl were sitting in there) and second the automated machines were broken. A lady sold us a ticket and said we could get on the next train and then we could not go.

This is one of the most scenic lakes I have ever seen. The path to get there has some rocky spots so wear good shoes for hiking. Take your water and camera/phone. The mountain reflections show up better in photos than by just looking.

It's fairly easy hike to get to this lake and the view is amazing. One of the iconic photo spots for a great shot of the Matterhorn. Also our first stop of our hike on the 5 Lakes Trail.

Arguably the best view on Matterhorn, much better than Rifflesee. The lake can be reached by 20-30 min walk from Blauherd gondola station. We managed with a two year old kid, but no way fro stroller. In order to catch some reflection, it is best to go in the morning with the first cable car. There are also less tourists in the morning, it might get crowdy around the afternoon hours and you don't want the whole spectrum of jacket colors to appear in your photos. Sometimes they even cannot be removed in post-processing.
There is a nice viewing spot a short walk beside the lake in Fluhalp direction.

This is a wonderful place to hike and see beautiful views of the Matterhorn. Make sure you go in the morning to catch the reflection of the Matterhorn in the lake. My wife has a bad knee and she was able to hike both ways from Blauhalp with no issues.
